Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph provided illustrates the participation figures for varied activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020. A key trend that can be seen is that over two decades, the level of participation grew in all activities, except amateur dramatics and martial arts.

Firstly, the film club has been quite popular since 2000, with a minimal increase in its numbers, from 65 to around 68 people. Secondly, table tennis saw steady growth until 2010, followed by a steep rise from 15 people to 50 in 2020. In the case of musical arts, participation was negligible until 2005, but later, it rose to almost 15.

On the other hand, after a substantial rise in 2005, participation dropped significantly from 30 to nearly 5 individuals. Similarly, martial arts, at first experienced a peak in 2010, at 40, but fell back by 2020 to around 35 people, that is where it had started.

To conclude, all activities grew significantly, but a fall was witnessed in martial arts and drama.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify several relevant patterns, including the film club’s consistently high participation, table tennis’s strong later growth, and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, the overview is inaccurate: participation did not grow in all activities except two, since amateur dramatics fell and martial arts fluctuated around a similar level, while musical performances rose. Some figures and trends are also misreported: the film club ended at about 66, not 68; table tennis rose from about 20 in 2010 to 54 in 2020, rather than growing steadily only until 2010; and musical performances began increasing in 2010, not after 2005. The amateur dramatics account omits its starting point and misstates the 2005 pattern. Select the main trends accurately and compare the series more clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall shape, moving from an introduction and overview to grouped details and a concluding sentence. Connectors such as “Firstly,” “On the other hand,” and “Similarly” help signal relationships between points. However, the grouping is not always logical: the paragraph beginning “On the other hand” discusses amateur dramatics without naming it, so the reference is unclear, and “Similarly” then shifts to martial arts. The conclusion also repeats the overview rather than adding a useful comparison. Improve progression by giving each activity an unmistakable reference and grouping the stable or fluctuating series separately from those with major rises or falls. This would make the links between details more precise and less dependent on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You show a good range of vocabulary for describing data, including “minimal increase,” “steady growth,” “steep rise,” “substantial rise,” and “dropped significantly.” These choices make the main movements easy to understand, and “participation figures” is an appropriate paraphrase of the chart title. Some expressions are less precise or do not fit the data well: “musical arts” changes the chart’s label, while “all activities grew significantly” contradicts the trends described. “Negligible” is also less exact than saying participation was zero at the start. Aim to use the activity names consistently and choose trend language that reflects the scale and direction of each series. Your range is already sufficient for flexible reporting, but precision in collocation and meaning needs more consistent control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the introductory clause “between 2000 and 2020” and the contrast in “but later, it rose.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “Similarly, martial arts, at first experienced a peak,” the commas incorrectly separate the subject from its verb; write “Martial arts initially peaked…” instead. The clause “that is where it had started” is awkwardly attached to the preceding sentence and would be clearer as a separate sentence or a relative clause. There is also a tense inconsistency in “has been quite popular since 2000” within a report of a completed period; “was consistently popular” is more suitable. Greater control of sentence boundaries and tense would strengthen an otherwise understandable response.
