Student answer (Band 6.5)

The graph depicts the data on the statistics of people who were taking part in different pursuits at one social place in Australia over a period of 20 years.

Overall, the number of participants who participated in the film club activity represented the highest statistics, while the musical performers category remained consistently low among all categories.

To begin with, the film club participants were at the top of the graph throughout the period, starting from 65 of participants and ended up at 67 of the total. Furthermore, the martial arts participants represented 35 of participants over a period of 20 years with a little bit fluctuation.

In addition, amateur dramatics depicted a persistent upward trend until 2005 and later, it experienced a tumbling trend began from 30 of participants and ended up at 5 of participants in the year 2020. Apart from that, the table tennis category began from 15 of participants in 2000 and it remained constant until 2010 and later, it surged to a substantial extent and reached over 50 of participants in 2020.

Finally, the musical performers list took its start in 2005 which were only 0 participants at that time and later, it revealed significant improvement in this category and reached below 20 of participants by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover all five activities and identify the main contrast between the film club’s consistently high participation and the musical performances’ low figures. Several reported values and trends are broadly accurate: table tennis rises sharply after 2010, while amateur dramatics falls to about six by 2020. This gives the response a relevant overview and supporting detail. However, some descriptions are imprecise or misleading: musical performances did not begin in 2005, but in 2010, and amateur dramatics rose only slightly to 2005 before declining; it did not start its fall from 30 participants. Martial arts is described as remaining at 35, which misses its fluctuations. More precise comparisons and a clearer account of the key turning points would strengthen coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the activities. Sequencing expressions such as “To begin with,” “In addition,” and “Finally” help readers follow the account, and the information is generally grouped logically. However, the repeated use of these formulaic transitions makes cohesion somewhat mechanical, and some links between ideas are not fully clear. For example, “Apart from that” introduces table tennis without showing how it contrasts with the preceding decline in amateur dramatics. The overview also says musical performances remained consistently low, but the later paragraph describes their rise without explicitly connecting these points. Use fewer stock transitions and make comparisons between series more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “fluctuation,” “persistent upward trend,” “tumbling trend,” and “surged.” These choices show an attempt to vary language rather than repeat basic verbs. However, some expressions are unnatural or imprecise, such as “the data on the statistics,” “highest statistics,” “35 of participants,” and “the musical performers list.” The repeated use of “participants” and “category” also limits flexibility. Choose standard chart language and accurate collocations, such as “participant numbers,” “stood at,” and “the number of people attending musical performances.” This would make the description more natural and precise while retaining the useful range you already demonstrate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses joined with “while” and “and later,” and most of the meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors nevertheless occur. In “starting from 65 of participants and ended up at 67,” the verb forms are not parallel, and “65 of participants” has an incorrect article/quantity pattern. The sentence about amateur dramatics—“it experienced a tumbling trend began from 30”—also combines clauses without a grammatical link. In “which were only 0 participants,” the relative clause has an agreement problem. Review verb parallelism, clause boundaries, and how quantities are expressed. Greater control of these patterns would make your varied sentences more consistently accurate.
