Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph compares the numbers of people who participated in five different activities at one social centre in Melbourne city in Australia from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, film club attracted by far the largest number of people over the period, whereas amateur dramatics became the less attractive activity by 2020. The numbers of participants in table tennis and musical performance increased, and the highest rose recorded for those in table tennis, while the figure for martial arts fluctuated throughout the timeframe.

Film club activity notably remained the most popular over the 20-years period, recording at around 65 individuals, whereas the figure for amateur dramartics dropped substantially after 2005 to become the least attractive option, recording approximately five participants by 2020. Martial arts, however, was the second common activity from 2000 to 2015, at around 35 individuals joined, continuing fluctuated around this level until the end of the period.

By contrast, table tennis recorded the highest growth, as its figure surged from about 20 individuals in 2010 to just over 50 in 2020, making it the second most popular activity after film club. Similarly, musical performances started to attract people from 2005, compared to the other activity that people joined from 2000. However, it figure rose gradually to reach roughly 20 participants by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address the task with a clear overview and select the main trends: film club remains the most popular, amateur dramatics declines, and table tennis and musical performances rise. The key comparisons are generally accurate, including table tennis reaching just over 50 and amateur dramatics falling to about five or six by 2020. The description of martial arts as fluctuating around 35 is also supported by the graph. Some details are less precise: film club varies from about 60 to 66 rather than staying at around 65, and musical performances began in 2010, not 2005. To strengthen the report, give a few more exact comparisons across the period and ensure each stated starting point matches the graph.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, overview and two detail paragraphs, and the broad progression from overall trends to comparisons is easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “Overall” and “By contrast” help signal the structure. However, some connections are awkward or unclear: “Similarly” does not establish a clear comparison between musical performances and table tennis, while “compared to the other activity that people joined from 2000” is difficult to interpret. The martial-arts sentence also combines several ideas without a clear progression. This is coherent overall, but cohesion is not consistently smooth. Use more precise links and make each sentence’s comparison explicit to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of trend vocabulary, including “fluctuated,” “dropped substantially,” “surged” and “gradually,” which helps communicate changes without relying only on basic terms. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision: “the highest rose recorded” is not idiomatic, “the second common activity” is awkward, and “it figure” has an incorrect word form. “Amateur dramartics” is misspelled, and “20-years period” is not correctly formed. Aim for accurate collocations and proofread spelling and word forms. More natural expressions such as “the sharpest increase” and “the second most popular activity” would make the report clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including contrast clauses with “whereas” and “while,” and most sentences remain understandable. Some grammatical errors are present, particularly in verb forms and sentence construction. For example, “continuing fluctuated around this level” should use a form such as “continued to fluctuate,” and “However, it figure rose” needs a possessive determiner (“its figure”). The phrase “at around 35 individuals joined” is also structurally incomplete; write “around 35 individuals participated.” There are occasional issues with articles, plurals and hyphenation, as in “the 20-years period.” Review these patterns and check each sentence for a complete, correctly formed clause.
