Student answer (Band 5.5)
The illustration shows the amount of participants that took part in several activities in Australia during the time period of 2000 to 2020. Overall, during these years, the number of participants in film club had higher number of participants and other activities increased or decreased during the years however the amateur dramatics was at the lowest in 2020.
It is quite evident from the graph that in 2000, the film club had the highest number of participants, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis had the average number of participants which range from 15-35, and musical performance had not any participant.
Furthermore, in 2010 film club was still the highest, and all the others were at moderate level, however musical performances started in 2005 and it rises after that. Lastly, in 2020, the film was still at top and amateur dramatics got the lowest number of participants and table tennis participants increased and remaining was at average number of participants.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall pattern: the film club remains the most popular activity, while amateur dramatics falls to the lowest level by 2020. You also mention the rise in table tennis and the later appearance of musical performances, so the response addresses the key features. However, some comparisons are vague or inaccurate. For example, saying the other activities were at an “average” or “moderate” level does not show their differing trends, and musical performances began in 2010, not 2005. The overview also says other activities “increased or decreased” without specifying the most notable changes. Include a few accurate figures and describe the sharp rise in table tennis and steady decline in amateur dramatics more clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by details for 2000, 2010 and 2020. Sequencing words such as “Overall,” “Furthermore” and “Lastly” help signal movement through the period. However, the organisation is somewhat mechanical, and the body paragraphs do not develop a clear comparison across the five activities. The long opening overview combines several ideas, while the later sentences group unrelated series together as “moderate” or “average.” The reference in “it rises after that” is also not fully clear. Organise the details around contrasting trends—for example, stable/high film-club figures versus rising table tennis and falling amateur dramatics—and use linking phrases to show those relationships.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “participants,” “highest,” “lowest,” “increased” and “decreased,” and the meaning is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, particularly “number of participants,” “average number” and “at moderate level.” Some word combinations are unnatural, such as “amount of participants” and “had not any participant,” which reduce precision. Aim for more varied, accurate language for describing figures and trends, such as “the figure stood at,” “remained relatively stable,” or “rose sharply.” Also use the activity labels consistently, including “film club” and “musical performances,” rather than shortening them in ways that may sound informal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is an attempt to use both simple and more complex sentences, including the overview clause “however the amateur dramatics was at the lowest in 2020.” The main trends can usually be understood, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the film club had higher number” needs an article and a clearer construction, while “musical performance had not any participant” has an incorrect negative form. In “it rises after that,” the tense shifts from past to present; keep the account consistently in the past. Punctuation also needs attention: “level, however” requires a space, and the sentence beginning “In 2000” contains a long list that would be clearer if divided or structured more carefully. Check articles, verb forms and sentence boundaries when editing.
