Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph shows the numer of participants in Melbourne over a period of 20 years, from 2000 to 2020

Overall, it is clear that film club increased the number of participants over the given period, while amateur dramatics experienced decline. In addition, film club had a highest number of participants, whereas amateur dramatics had lowest.

Looking at the details, film club started at approximately sixty two participants in 2000 and then increased gradually to sixty seven by 2020. Smilarly, table tenis showed an upward trend from fourteen participants to fifty three, during the same period.

On the other hand, musical performances followed a different pattern. Its figure increased each year by one participant. Meanwhile, amateur dramatics decreased by 2005 to 2020 with the participant number from twenty seven to five. Finally, musical performances had no participants in 2000 and 2005, but the figure increased to 12 in 2010 and reached approximately 18 by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main contrast between the film club’s high figures and the decline in amateur dramatics, and you include several relevant values. However, the overview is incomplete: it misses table tennis’s substantial rise to become the second-largest activity by 2020, and the emergence of musical performances. Some details are inaccurate or unclear. Film club began at about 64, not 62; amateur dramatics fell from about 28 in 2005 to 6 in 2020, rather than from 27 to 5; and musical performances did not rise by one participant each year. Martial arts, which remained broadly stable around the mid-30s, is not reported. Select the most important trends and compare them accurately to make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing selected trends. The contrast signalled by “On the other hand” helps guide the reader, and the information is generally easy to follow. This coherent structure is a strength. However, the progression is not fully controlled: musical performances are introduced in the third paragraph, then discussed again in the final sentence, making the account repetitive. “Meanwhile” also links trends that are not clearly contrasted, and the final “Finally” does not introduce a distinct final series. Group related trends together—for example, the declining series and the rising series—and use referencing and linking phrases to show the relationship between them more precisely.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-appropriate language, including “increased,” “upward trend,” “decline,” and “approximately,” so the main trends are understandable. Some phrasing is imprecise or repetitive, however. “Increased the number of participants” would be more naturally expressed as “rose in participant numbers,” while “followed a different pattern” is vague unless the pattern is specified. There are also spelling errors in “numer,” “Smilarly,” and “table tenis,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for precise trend vocabulary and check spelling carefully. For example, describe table tennis as rising sharply, and use “remained relatively stable” for martial arts rather than relying on general phrases such as “different pattern.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview clause “while amateur dramatics experienced decline” and the contrast introduced by “whereas.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical choices are inaccurate, though. In “film club had a highest number,” the article should be “the”; “amateur dramatics had lowest” also needs an article before “lowest.” The sentence “amateur dramatics decreased by 2005 to 2020 with the participant number from twenty seven to five” has an unclear time construction and incomplete phrasing. Try “Amateur dramatics fell from about 28 participants in 2005 to 6 in 2020.” Continue varying sentence structures while checking articles and making comparisons grammatically complete.
