Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall patterns: film-club participation remains comparatively high, table tennis rises strongly after 2010, and amateur dramatics declines to the lowest level by 2020. You also cover all five activities and include several relevant figures. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: film-club participation ends at about 66, not 70, and martial arts fluctuates rather than increasing to 2010 and then staying stable. The overview also calls the film-club trend “stable” without noting its slight dip and recovery, while the musical-performances trend could be described more fully. To strengthen the response, report the main comparisons more precisely and distinguish participant numbers from percentages, since the graph shows numbers.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to details, and the activities are generally grouped in a sensible way. This gives the reader an overall route through the information. However, the final two paragraphs rely heavily on long sentences joined by “whereas” and “as well as,” which makes some comparisons difficult to follow. “Furthermore” introduces another set of figures, but the links between the series are not always clear. Use shorter sentences to separate trends, and organise the details into clearer groups—for example, the relatively stable activities first, followed by the sharply changing ones. More precise referencing would also help readers track which activity each figure describes.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “declined slightly,” “increased gradually,” and “rose suddenly,” so the main movements are usually understandable. There is some repetition of “proportion” and “percentage,” although the chart reports participant numbers rather than percentages. A few choices are imprecise or unnatural, such as “lowest than others” and “by 70%,” and “musicial performance” contains a spelling error. Aim for accurate chart language and vary trend verbs without forcing synonyms: “number of participants,” “fell,” “remained broadly stable,” and “reached” would fit this task. These improvements would make the description more precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses linked with “whereas” and “after that,” and the reader can generally understand the trends. However, some long sentences combine several ideas without clear grammatical boundaries, as in the sentence beginning “The Film club proportion was 64%.” This creates awkward clause connections and punctuation problems. There are also errors in sentence construction and articles, such as “The time period was 2000 to 2020,” and inconsistent capitalisation at the start of “furthermore.” Practise separating comparisons into complete sentences and checking verb forms, articles, and punctuation. Greater control of these structures would make your range more effective.
