Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph provides information on the change in the numbers of contestants at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia, for five different activities, over a twenty-year period starting from 2000 and ending in 2020.

Overall, it is clear that the Film club was the most popular activity over the entire period. Table tennis experienced significant growth. Conversely, Amateur dramatics was the only one that experienced a sharp decline in its participants.

In general, the Film club was the most favourite and popular category for participants, with roughly 64 members in 2000 at its start, and then it remained steady and showed minor changes in its numbers for all these years, and ended at 66 members in 2020. On the other hand, participants in Martial arts always remained stable, starting with 36 players, reaching a peak of 40 members and then ending with 35 members in 2020.

However, the most dramatic activity was Amateur dramatics, which started in 2000 with 26 members, showed a severe decline in its figures of participants and reached a low of 5 participants in 2020. This was the only category which showed a declining trend over the two-year period.

The next activity was Table tennis, which started with 18 members, and then it showed a significant increase in its number and reached a peak of 54 participants in 2020. The last category was Musical performance, which did not exist for the first five years of the social center. It was first joined by 12 participants in the five-year period of 2005 to 2010, and then it gradually increased for all the following years, and in 2020, it reached its highest number of participants, with 18 members.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You give a clear overview of the main patterns: the film club remains the largest activity, table tennis rises substantially, and amateur dramatics declines. Most figures and trends are reported accurately, including the film club’s ending level and the fall in amateur dramatics. However, some details are imprecise: martial arts fluctuates rather than remaining stable, and its peak is about 38, not 40. Table tennis begins at about 16, rather than 18, and musical performances begin in 2010, not during the 2005–2010 period. The claim that amateur dramatics declined over a “two-year period” is also incorrect; the chart covers twenty years. More precise comparisons and careful checking of dates would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to separate descriptions of the activities. This makes the main information easy to locate. However, the organisation is somewhat mechanical: repeated openings such as “On the other hand,” “However,” and “The next activity” make the progression feel like a list rather than a connected comparison. Some links also suggest contrasts that are not especially meaningful, and “the most dramatic activity” is unclear as a reference. Grouping the rising series together and the declining or fluctuating series together would create a more logical progression. Use linking phrases selectively and make references to each activity explicit when needed.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “significant growth,” “sharp decline,” “remained steady,” and “gradually increased.” These choices communicate the broad patterns, though some wording is repetitive or imprecise. “Most favourite and popular” repeats the same idea, while “the most dramatic activity” does not clearly describe a trend. “Contestants” and “players” are not the most suitable general terms for people taking part in these activities; “participants” is more accurate and consistent. There are also awkward collocations such as “first joined by 12 participants.” Aim for precise, natural trend language and avoid using several near-synonyms together.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “while,” “which,” and “and then,” and most meanings remain clear. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, but they rarely obstruct understanding. For example, “over the two-year period” conflicts with the stated twenty-year span, and “It was first joined by 12 participants” has an unclear grammatical subject and construction. The long sentence beginning “In general, the Film club…” also strings together several clauses, making the structure less controlled. To strengthen accuracy, check that pronouns clearly refer to the activity, keep time references consistent, and divide long sentences where several stages are being described.
