Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph illustrates detail on the numbers of partcipants involved in diferent activities in Melbourne, Australia for 20 years.
Overall, the number of participants in the film club and martial arts almost remained steady with greatest number of participation in the film club, whereas, the involvement of pupils in the table tennis increased dramatically. In contrast, earlier, there were no participants in the musical performance, however, it also rose at the end. Moreover, the engagement in amateur dramatics reducd gradually.
On the one hand, it can be seen that approximately 65 pupils prticipated in the film club in 2000, which remained constant through out a period of 20 years. In addition, amateur dramatics involved 25 participants in 2000, which decreased to 20 and almost 2 from 2010 to 2020. On the contrary, in 2000, only 15 people were involved in the table tennis activity. However, this fraction incrased substantially to 35 in 2015, peaking at 50 in 2020.
On the other hand, almost 38 people participated in the martial arts in 2000, reducing this proportion to 31 in 2005, and again rising to 38 pupils in 2010 to 2020. Finally, there were no participants in the music activities until 2005. Afterwards, their number rose gradually to 10 and 12 in 2010 and 2020 respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main patterns clearly: film-club participation is highest and broadly stable, table tennis rises sharply, and amateur dramatics declines. The overview also notes the initially absent musical performances. Most reported figures and comparisons are grounded in the graph, and the response covers all five activities. However, some details are inaccurate or over-generalised: film-club numbers dip before rising, rather than remaining constant throughout; amateur dramatics falls to about 6, not 2, by 2020; and musical performances reach about 18, not 12. The martial-arts figure is also broadly stable rather than simply rising from 2010 to 2020. More precise reporting of these end points and fluctuations would strengthen an otherwise clear summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. The main trends are grouped sensibly, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In addition” and “Finally” help the reader follow the account. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and shows some features of stronger progression. However, “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” imply a contrast between the two detail paragraphs that is not clearly established, while “On the contrary” is not a natural link for the table-tennis comparison. Some information is also grouped less effectively: the overview’s “earlier” and “at the end” are vague, and the final paragraph combines martial arts with musical performances without a clear organising principle. Use more precise transitions and group series by trend.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “remained steady,” “decreased,” “rose gradually” and “peaking,” so the main trends are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “involvement” and “engagement.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “illustrates detail on” would be more naturally expressed as “shows the number of”; “fraction” does not fit participant numbers; and “pupils” is unsupported because the graph refers to participants, not schoolchildren. Spelling errors such as “partcipants,” “diferent,” “reduccd” and “incrased” are noticeable. Build accuracy by checking spelling and choosing standard chart-reporting terms consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses (“which decreased to 20”) and contrast clauses (“whereas…”). Most sentences communicate the intended trend, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical problems remain, particularly in sentence construction and tense or clause control. For example, “reducing this proportion to 31 in 2005” leaves the relationship between the subject and the following action unclear; “rising to 38 pupils in 2010 to 2020” also has an awkward time construction. In “there were no participants … until 2005,” the wording conflicts with the graph, which shows none through 2005, then participants from 2010. Aim for complete, clearly linked clauses and use precise time phrases such as “from 2010 onwards.”
