Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies the chart’s subject and reports some relevant figures, including the film club’s high starting point and table tennis’s strong rise. However, it addresses the task only partially: it stops before describing several key series and gives no complete overview of the main changes. The claim that all activities fluctuated is too broad; amateur dramatics declined markedly, while musical performances rose from zero and table tennis increased substantially. The statement that martial arts showed one of the most dramatic changes is also not supported by the relatively small variation in its figures. The response is 44 words below the required minimum, which contributes to the limited coverage. To improve, include a concise overview and compare the major rises, falls and stable trends across all five activities.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introduction is followed by a general statement and then some figures. The sequence from the overall comment to the film club and table tennis is understandable, and phrases such as “In 2000” and “over the period” help signal time. However, the response ends abruptly, with the table-tennis sentence unfinished in its comparison, and the short paragraphs do not develop a clear progression through the data. The overview also groups all activities together despite their different patterns. Use a complete overview paragraph, then organise details by contrasting trends—for example, rising activities against declining or relatively stable ones—and ensure each sentence is finished.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses some suitable chart vocabulary, including “participants,” “trend,” “decline,” and “surged,” and these choices communicate the main figures. There is some range beyond basic description, but word choice and spelling are not consistently controlled. “An overwhelming Only 18” is an awkward and contradictory phrase, while “A fluctuation” inaccurately suggests that every series varied in the same way. “Austrailia” and “particpants” are spelling errors, and “social activities at social centre” is repetitive. Choose precise terms that match each pattern, such as “remained broadly stable,” “rose sharply,” or “fell steadily,” and proofread spelling and collocations. This would make the limited set of reported comparisons clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple statements and some attempts to link ideas, as in “the trend remained stable with a slight decline.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but grammatical control is uneven. The opening has a subject–verb agreement error: “The line graph compare” should be “The line graph compares.” In “at social centre,” an article is needed, and “for the period of 20 years” is an awkwardly formed time expression. The sentence beginning “An overwhelming Only 18” is also structurally faulty, and the final sentence lacks a clear ending. Aim for complete, well-formed sentences and check agreement, articles and punctuation. A wider range of accurate comparisons, such as “while” or “whereas” clauses, would improve control.
