Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graph illustrates the participation of people for 5 different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Austrailia ove the period of 20 years.

Overall, the trend did not remain the same and kept fluctuating across all the events. A rapid change can be seen across table tennis and amateur dramatics. On the other hand, number of participants remained static in film club and martial arts.

In 2000, the most common activity people participated in was film club (65), followed by martial arts (38) and amateur dramatics (25). The number of participats in film club remained almost same with a slight sulm in 2010. Similarly a steady trend can be seen across martial arts with mild surge in 2010. A slight surge can also be seen in the year 2005 in amateur dramatics but a sudden fluctuation took place with the umber of participants declining to 5 in 2020

No on participated in Musical performances in 2000 and 2005, but a palpitations can be seen over the years with participants reaching 20 in

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the five activities and report several relevant figures, including film club at about 65 in 2000, amateur dramatics falling to around 5 by 2020, and musical performances starting at zero. However, the overview is not fully accurate: table tennis changes dramatically, rising from about 16 to 54, while film club and martial arts are relatively stable; saying that all events fluctuated and that table tennis and amateur dramatics both show “rapid change” misses this contrast. The account also ends mid-sentence after “reaching 20 in”, so the later development of musical performances is not completed, and table tennis is not described in the detail its strong rise merits. Select the main contrasts more clearly and complete the key trend descriptions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and paragraphs that group some activities together. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is weakened by the broad overview, which does not clearly organise the main trends, and by the abrupt ending: “reaching 20 in” leaves the final point unfinished. Some links are repetitive or imprecise, such as repeated use of “Similarly” and “A slight surge,” while the shift from amateur dramatics to musical performances is not smoothly managed. Organise the body around clear comparisons—for example, stable activities versus those with major rises or falls—and use linking phrases to show those relationships.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “participants,” “declining,” “steady trend” and “surge,” and the activity names are generally clear. However, several word choices and spelling errors reduce precision: “participation of people” is less natural than “number of participants,” “sulm” appears to be an incorrect word, and “palpitations” does not describe a rise in participation. “A sudden fluctuation” is also vague when the chart shows a sustained decline in amateur dramatics. Check spelling carefully and choose terms that describe the direction and scale of change precisely. Avoid repeating general phrases such as “slight surge” when a more exact description of the trend is available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including “No one participated in Musical performances in 2000 and 2005, but…” and sentences beginning with “Similarly.” However, errors in sentence construction and grammatical control sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “The number of participats in film club remained almost same” is missing an article before “same,” and “On the other hand, number of participants…” also needs an article. The final sentence is incomplete, and “a slight sulm in 2010” does not form a clear grammatical clause. Work on complete sentences, articles, and consistent past-tense reporting, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
