Student answer (Band 6.5)

A line graph compare participation in five activities at social centre in Melbourne, Austrailia for the period 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the film club reamianed the popular activity throughout the period, while table tennis experienced the most significant growth. In contrast amateur dramatics saw a major decline. Martial arts fluctuated slightly, whereas musical performances increased gradually from zero participants.

In 2000, film club had approximately 64 particpants considerably more than other activities. Its numbers declined slightly to 60 in 2010 before recovering to around 66 by 2020. Participation in martial arts varied moderately, falling from 38 in 2000 to 32 in 2005 , then rising to 39 in 2010 and ending roughly at 36 in 2020.

Table tennis showed a dramatic upward trend. Starting only at 16 in 2000, it remained stable at 20 till 2010, after which numbers climbed sharply to 35 in 2015 and reached aproximately 54 in 2020, making it second most popular activity. By contrast, amateur dramatics decreased steadily from 26 participants in 2000 to just 6 by the end the of 2020. Musial performances had no participants in 2000 and 2005, but attendance rose gradually to 12 in 2010 and 18 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response selects the main features effectively and gives a clear overview: film club remained the most popular, table tennis grew markedly, and amateur dramatics declined. It also covers all five activities and supports these points with relevant figures, such as table tennis rising from 16 to about 54 and amateur dramatics falling from 26 to 6. Most reported values and trends match the chart. There are a couple of small inaccuracies: martial arts began at about 36, not 38, and reached about 38 in 2010, rather than 39. The claim that table tennis became the second most popular is accurate by 2020. More precise reporting of the martial-arts figures would strengthen an otherwise well-selected and well-supported summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised in a clear progression: an introduction, an overview, and then paragraphs describing the main trends and supporting details. The contrast between the declining amateur dramatics and rising table tennis is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” and “By contrast” help signal relationships. The final paragraph groups the remaining activities sensibly. Cohesion is generally effective, though some transitions are a little formulaic, and the martial-arts figures are placed in the same paragraph as the film-club figures without a particularly clear comparison between them. To improve, use occasional comparative links that explain how series relate, rather than relying mainly on contrast markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “fluctuated slightly,” “declined steadily,” “climbed sharply,” and “remained stable.” These choices communicate the chart’s main movements clearly, and the writer varies expressions for increases and decreases. However, several spelling errors—“Austrailia,” “reamianed,” “particpants,” “aproximately,” and “Musial”—show inconsistent control. Some phrasing is also less natural, such as “had no participants” and “numbers climbed,” where more precise collocations would improve the report. Continue using trend vocabulary, but proofread carefully and choose standard chart-reporting expressions such as “there were no participants” and “the figure rose.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and more complex structures, including a clear overview with a “while” contrast and sentences beginning “Starting only at 16…” and “By contrast…”. Most meanings remain clear, but some grammatical errors persist. The opening needs subject–verb agreement and an article: “A line graph compare participation” should be “The line graph compares participation.” In “In contrast amateur dramatics saw…,” punctuation is needed after the introductory phrase. The phrase “by the end the of 2020” has an incorrect word order, and the comma spacing in “2005 , then” should be corrected. Greater accuracy in these basic patterns, alongside the existing sentence variety, would improve control.
