Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph depicts the amount of people who participated in Film club, Martial arts, Amateur dramatics, Table tennis and Musical performances in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, Film club is the highest chosen activity among the pulbic of the city. Moreover, number of participants in case of Table tennis and Musical performances increased over the 2-decades whereas, it decreased for Amateur dramatics. The rest of activities experienced stability within some fluctuations.
Looking at the unchanged data, around 65 residents of the city joined film club in 2000, which is the highest number among all. With a slight decrease to 65 in 2010, it remained the same until 2020. Furthermore, martial arts gained just below 40 members in 2000, remained similar until 2000, with a minimal decline to just over 30 member in 2005 and 2015.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the graph’s subject and give a broad overview, correctly noting that film club is the most popular activity and that table tennis and musical performances rise while amateur dramatics declines. However, the report is incomplete and several details are inaccurate: film club falls from about 64 to 60 by 2010 before rising to 66, rather than remaining at about 65 from 2010 onward; martial arts fluctuates rather than remaining similar throughout. The final paragraph stops at “member”, so the major changes in table tennis, musical performances and amateur dramatics are not actually reported. The response also falls six words short of the required minimum. To improve, complete the account and select accurate start-and-end figures to support the overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and an attempt to group the figures into two body paragraphs. Phrases such as “Overall” and “Turning to the remaining data” help signal the stages of the report. However, the progression is not completed because the final paragraph ends abruptly at “member”, leaving the reader without the promised account of the remaining activities. The grouping is also not fully effective: “unchanged data” is an unclear heading for series that fluctuate, and the martial-arts sentence repeats the year 2000. Use clear topic sentences based on trends, then report each series in a logical order and finish the paragraph.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “participants”, “fluctuations”, “decline” and “increased”, and the activity names are generally handled clearly. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, however: “amount of people” is less suitable than “number of people”, while “highest chosen activity” and “gained just below 40 members” do not express the graph’s information naturally. There are also spelling and form errors, including “pulbic” and “member” where a plural is needed. Aim for precise reporting collocations and avoid describing participants as members unless the graph supports that meaning. More accurate vocabulary would make the comparisons clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mix of simple and more complex sentences, for example the overview sentence beginning “Moreover” and the clause “which is the highest number among all.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical control remain. In “With a slight decrease to 65 in 2010, it remained the same until 2020,” the opening phrase does not clearly attach to the subject, and the figures also make the statement confusing. “Remained similar until 2000” repeats the starting year instead of giving a clear time sequence, while “30 member” needs plural agreement. Check that each sentence has a clear subject and verb, and use consistent, accurate past-tense reporting.
