Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The line chart depict the information about number of participants from time period 2000 to 2020 in one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for different activities.
Overall, from beginning to the end of the time period, the Film club maintains its peak and became the highest in the graph. Surprisingly, in the starting the Musical performances participants denotes the lowest position but in the end it was replaced by the Amateur dramatics and reached the bottom point.
The Film club's figure holds the highest number of participants as it had no change in its proportion. Martial arts moderately increased as it is the second largest in the chart in time between 2000 to 2020. Music activity was emerging in the year 2005 and then it inclined slowly in the next 15 years.
Table tennis was the only game which boosts for nearly 30 participants, by crossing it in the year 2010 the Amateur dramatics declined to the lowest point of the table in the periods of 2 decades.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall contrast: the film club remains the largest activity, while amateur dramatics falls to the lowest level by 2020. You also mention the strong rise in table tennis and the later growth of musical performances, so the response addresses the key features. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. The film club does not remain unchanged: it dips from about 64 to 60 before rising again. Martial arts fluctuates rather than increasing overall, ending at roughly its starting level. Musical performances begin in 2010, not 2005. The overview is relevant, but the body would be stronger with clearer, accurate comparisons and selected figures to support each trend.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and two body paragraphs, and the reader can follow the broad topic. However, progression within the body paragraphs is uneven: the final paragraph moves from table tennis to amateur dramatics without clearly explaining their relationship. Some linking expressions are awkward or unclear, particularly “by crossing it in the year 2010,” which makes the comparison difficult to interpret. The overview also repeats the idea that the film club is highest. Grouping the activities by trend—for example, stable/fluctuating lines and rising/falling lines—and using clearer links between comparisons would create a more consistent progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “participants,” “declined,” “lowest point” and “increased,” and you attempt a range of expressions to describe change. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task: “holds the highest number” and “no change in its proportion” do not describe the film club’s fluctuating figures precisely, while “boosts for nearly 30 participants” is an awkward way to report a rise. “Music activity” is also less precise than the chart label, “musical performances.” These choices sometimes make the intended meaning less clear. Aim for accurate collocations such as “remained the most popular,” “rose sharply” and “fell steadily,” and use the activity names consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast in “but in the end it was replaced by the Amateur dramatics.” The main message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening has subject–verb disagreement in “The line chart depict,” and “from beginning to the end” needs an article. Tense and verb-form control are also uneven: “Film club maintains its peak and became” shifts tense, while “the Musical performances participants denotes” has an unclear noun phrase and incorrect agreement. There are also awkward sentence constructions that obscure comparisons. Check agreement, articles and consistent past-tense reporting, and simplify sentences when a complex structure is not secure.
