IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The number of participants vary for different activities. As shown in the graph the participants in film club were remain same , which shows that they are connected to their club more loyal than others. There was a sudden increase in table tennis from 2010 to 2020 may be due to more physical activities from humans. The graph of amateur dramatics decreases , because i think today people prefer comedy and fictional movies more than an amateur dramas. In case of musical perormances there was an increase in 2005 which show that if a boy or a girl born in 2001 they start singing but did not follow their passion for their whole life , so in differnt years the musical performances increases but upto a limit. According to me the feature that is changing this graph is interest of people , evolution in film industry , more fictional and suspense in films. Moreover martial arts and musical performance are unique talent , so only talented people keep it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify several relevant overall movements, especially the rise in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics, but the response only partially reports what the graph shows. The film-club figure did not remain the same: it dipped slightly before rising to about 66. Musical performances began at zero in 2000 and increased from 2010 onward; the claimed increase in 2005 is inaccurate. Much of the response then speculates about why trends occurred, including film preferences and people’s ages, which the graph cannot establish. To make the summary more effective, give a clear overview of the main contrasts and support it with accurate figures, while leaving out unsupported explanations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response moves from one activity to another, so the reader can recognise the topics being discussed. However, the ideas are not arranged into a clear report structure: there is no distinct overview, and the final sentences shift into personal explanations rather than summarising the data. Linking phrases such as “Moreover” and “In case of” are used, but they do not create a consistent progression, and some connections between ideas are unclear. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview of the main trends, and paragraphs comparing the activities. Use linking words to show genuine contrasts or changes over time, rather than adding speculative comments.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant terms for describing a graph, including “increase,” “decreases,” “participants,” and “feature,” and the activity labels help identify the data. However, the range is limited and several choices or forms are inaccurate, such as “remain same,” “more physical activities from humans,” and “keep it” for retaining an interest or skill. Spelling errors such as “perormances” and “differnt” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, neutral language suited to data reporting, using verbs such as “rose,” “fell,” and “fluctuated,” and nouns such as “participation” or “number of participants.” Avoid informal or unclear explanations of people’s motives.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “which” and “because,” but control is inconsistent. For example, “The number of participants vary” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “participants in film club were remain same” combines verb forms incorrectly. There are also problems with articles, plurals, and sentence punctuation, as in “an amateur dramas” and the comma spacing in “decreases ,”. These errors sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow. Practise accurate present and past forms for describing trends, and check agreement and sentence boundaries. Short, well-controlled sentences are preferable to longer explanations that contain several errors.
