Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main contrast between the consistently high film-club figures and the decline in amateur dramatics, and you include several relevant comparisons. However, the overview is incomplete: it misses table tennis’s sharp rise to become the second-largest activity by 2020, and musical performances began in 2010, not 2005. Some figures and descriptions are also inaccurate: film-club participation fell slightly before rising, rather than remaining the same, and amateur dramatics rose only to about 28 in 2005 before declining. The response addresses the task only partially, with some key features under-reported. It is also 6 words below the required 150-word minimum; the 18 words copied from the prompt are excluded from the count. Add a fuller overview and accurate key trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic sequence: an opening sentence, a brief overview, and details about the activities. This gives the reader some sense of the topic, and the comparisons within the martial-arts sentence are presented chronologically. However, the organisation does not develop the information clearly across paragraphs, and several activities are compressed into long, loosely connected sentences. Repeated use of “while” and “and” makes relationships between trends less clear, while the final sentence combines two separate series without explaining their significance. Use distinct paragraphs for the overview and grouped details, and connect comparisons more precisely—for example, contrast the steep rise in table tennis with the fall in amateur dramatics.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant activity names and some suitable reporting language, including “decreased,” “increased,” and “reaching.” However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a graph. “Most famous” and “most participated activity” do not mean the activity with the highest participation, while “candidates,” “contestants,” “personnel,” and “players” are unsuitable substitutes for participants in these activities. There are also noticeable spelling errors, such as “cotestants,” “candidtates,” and “afte,” which reduce clarity. Aim for precise, repeated use of “participants” where appropriate, and learn a small set of natural trend phrases such as “remained relatively stable” and “rose sharply.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the chronological sequence in the martial-arts sentence is generally understandable. However, control is uneven, particularly in tense and sentence construction. The present-tense “is” in “Amateur dramatics is the activity” does not match the past period being described; use “was.” The phrase “kept losing its participants after a slight increase … to 6” has an unclear grammatical relationship between the increase and subsequent decline. “Gained its most of the candidates” also has faulty structure. Some sentences run together several changes without clear punctuation. Use past simple consistently for the historical data, and separate each series’ main changes into clear, controlled sentences.
