Student answer (Band 5.5)

The provided graph illustrates the data on the countings of members for various activities at one cummunal centre in Melbourne, Australia for the time 2000 to 2020.

Overall, it is clear that the number of participants were involved in film club, martial arts, amatuer dramatics, table tennis and musical perfomances. The highest figure of members were in film club from 2000 to 2020. However, the lowest number of participants were in musical perfomances, while amateur dramatics have low figure from 2015 to 2020.

Furthermore, film club have approximately 65 to 69 members whereas, martial arts have fluctuation figure, its initial number of participants were 40 but it was dramaticaly changed in every year. Moreever, musical participants were in low figure from 10 members in 2010 and approximately 19 visitors in 2020, while amateur dramatics sharply decreased from 2005 to 2020 around 6 members. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the five activities and include several relevant trends, especially the rise in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, the overview is not fully accurate: musical performances were not the lowest throughout the period, since they rose above amateur dramatics by 2015, and amateur dramatics was the lowest by 2020. Some figures are also overstated or imprecise: film club stayed around 60–66, not 65–69, and table tennis reached about 54 rather than 58. The description of martial arts as changing “in every year” is also too broad for data shown at five-year intervals. Select the main comparisons more carefully and report the key turning points accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic overall structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “In addition” help signal relationships. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the overview repeats that participant numbers were involved in the activities without summarising the main changes, and the final paragraph moves between series without a clear grouping or comparison. Some links are mechanical, while “whereas” introduces a contrast that is not fully developed. Organise the details into clearer comparisons—for example, stable or fluctuating activities together, followed by the strongest rises and falls—and use references that make each comparison easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “participants,” “fluctuation,” and “sharply decreased,” so the reader can generally understand the trends you intend to describe. However, the range and control are limited, with several noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation problems: “countings of members,” “cummunal,” “amatuer,” “perfomances,” “dramaticaly,” and “incremented” are inaccurate or unnatural. “Visitors” is also not an appropriate substitute for participants in this context, and “low figure” is repeated rather than varied. These choices sometimes make the description less precise. Build a reliable set of natural trend phrases, such as “the number of participants,” “remained relatively stable,” and “rose substantially,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a contrast with “whereas” and a time clause beginning “while.” However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and errors occur in basic agreement and verb forms. For example, “the number of participants were” should be “the number … was,” while “film club have” and “amateur dramatics have” need singular agreement or a plural subject. The phrase “its initial number … were 40” also has a mismatch between the singular noun and verb. Some sentences combine several ideas with commas, making their structure difficult to follow. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and build complex sentences around one clear comparison at a time.
