Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response selects the main patterns and gives a clear overview: film club remains the leading activity, amateur dramatics declines markedly, and table tennis rises strongly. It also covers all five activities and supports these points with figures, such as film club at about 64 initially and amateur dramatics falling to 6. Most reported trends match the chart. However, some details are inaccurate: film club is around 60 in 2010 and reaches about 66 in 2020, rather than remaining near 62 until 2010 and rising to nearly 70; table tennis ends at about 54, not 57. The claim that musical performances were “introduced” in 2010 is also not established by the graph; it only shows zero participants earlier. More precise reporting would strengthen an otherwise well-selected summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs grouping the activities. Its progression is generally logical, and transitions such as “In contrast” and “Finally” help signal changes of focus. This gives the reader a clear route through the main trends. However, cohesion is not consistently controlled: the table-tennis paragraph begins with a lower-case “it” after a full stop, and several sentences run together or use punctuation awkwardly, making relationships between details less smooth. The overview also combines two trends in a sentence that is grammatically difficult to follow. To improve, use complete, clearly punctuated sentences and organise related comparisons together, while retaining the useful paragraph structure and signposting already present.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “participants,” “popular,” “decline,” “increase,” and “overtaking,” and it attempts to describe change rather than simply list figures. However, the range and control are limited, with frequent spelling errors and inaccurate word forms that can distract or make meaning harder to follow: “grapgh,” “flucting,” “continously,” and “aurged” are examples. Some collocations are also unnatural, such as “the impressive increase” and “its popularity grew” when describing participant numbers. Aim for accurate, conventional trend language and check spelling carefully. More precise choices such as “rose sharply,” “fluctuated between,” and “fell steadily” would make the account clearer and more appropriate to an academic graph summary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a mixture of simple and more complex structures, including “before raising to nearly 70” and a contrast introduced by “In contrast.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur in sentence construction, verb forms, articles, and punctuation. For example, “the number of participants is amateur dramatics decline sharply” does not form a clear grammatical sentence, while “the number remain stable” lacks subject–verb agreement. The table-tennis section also contains a sentence fragment after “Table tennies show the impressive increase.” These problems sometimes make the intended relationships difficult to understand. Practise building accurate sentences around a clear subject and verb, and use past-tense forms consistently for the completed period, such as “rose,” “fell,” and “remained.”
