Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the chart topic and gives a brief overview, noting that film club is among the largest activities at the start and musical performances begin at zero. It also reports several opening figures and recognises the rise in table tennis. However, the overview is incomplete and partly inaccurate: martial arts does not remain one of the largest activities throughout, and the final statement that “other on are same” misses the sharp fall in amateur dramatics, the modest rise in musical performances, and the broadly stable martial-arts figures. The film-club trend is also described as steadily increasing, although it first declines. The response is 13 words below the required minimum, further limiting its coverage. Develop a clear overview and compare the main changes across the period.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs referring to 2000 and 2020. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “In 2000” and “In 2020” help signal time. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph gives only a couple of comparisons and ends with the unclear phrase “And other on are same.” Connections between the overview and the detailed figures are also weak, and the response does not group the activities by their trends. Organise the body around key patterns—for example, rising participation, declining participation, and relative stability—and use clear linking phrases to show how the figures compare.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses basic vocabulary relevant to the chart, including “participants,” “increased,” and “zero participants,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, spelling, and form errors reduce clarity. Examples include “martial” instead of “martial arts,” “tables tennis” instead of “table tennis,” “person” where “people” or “participants” is needed, and repeated misspellings such as “paticipate,” “paricipants,” and “beigning.” The phrase “other on are same” is also difficult to interpret. Use accurate activity names consistently and vary reporting language with terms such as “rose,” “declined,” “remained stable,” and “reached.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a few longer sentence forms, including a contrast with “whereas,” and uses time references to organise the description. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, with frequent errors in tense, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “film club has largest number” needs a past-tense verb and an article, while “film club and martial arts has” has incorrect subject–verb agreement. The opening sentence uses the awkward pattern “between 2000 to 2020,” and “the number … over the year are shown” has a mismatch between subject and verb. The final sentence, “And other on are same,” is not grammatically complete. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and simple comparison structures before adding more complex clauses.
