The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line chart illustrates the comparision between the number of people attending various activities conducted at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia during the years 2000 to 2020.
Overall, it can be seen the number of members for the film club and martial arts remained steady over the time period. The number of partakers in table tennis were initially the same but then saw a sharp increase. Musical performances saw a gradual incline in the number of new joinees while amateur dramatics lost popularity over the years.
The film club had a 65 members in the year 2000, while that number declined to 60 in 2010, it rose back upto 65 in 2020. Martial arts had an initial 37 participants, this number fluctuated slightly up and down over the course of the next 20 years but ended on the same amount of partakers. In the first 5 years table tennis only saw 4 new people join its club, but from 2010 to 2020 the number of new people joining rose dramtically from 40 to 55.
The musical performance club only came into existence from 2005 onwards. It saw exponential growth from 2005 to 2010, but then only had around 6 new participants join in the next 10 years. Amateur dramatics in the start saw 3 new members join, but then saw a drastic decline and from around 29 members to 8 people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main patterns: film-club and martial-arts attendance is broadly stable, table tennis rises strongly, musical performances grow, and amateur dramatics declines. The overview is relevant, and you include figures to support several trends. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: table tennis was about 20 in 2010, not 40, and musical performances began at zero in 2000, rather than coming into existence from 2005. The final amateur-dramatics figures are also misreported: it fell from about 14 in 2015 to 6 in 2020, not from 29 to 8. Your coverage is therefore useful but uneven; more precise reporting of the key turning points and endpoints would make the summary more complete and secure.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to detail paragraphs. The overview helps the reader understand the main trends before the figures are discussed, and time markers such as “in the year 2000” and “from 2010 to 2020” support the sequence. Some links between ideas are less controlled, however. The third paragraph combines film club, martial arts and table tennis, while the final paragraph shifts between musical performances and amateur dramatics without a clear comparison. Phrases such as “while that number declined” also create long, loosely joined sentences. Grouping the rising and falling activities more consistently, and using clearer sentence boundaries, would strengthen progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “fluctuated,” “gradual incline,” “sharp increase” and “drastic decline.” These choices help communicate the broad movements, and the meaning is generally clear. Some less formal or imprecise expressions reduce accuracy: “new joinees,” “partakers” and “new people joining” are not natural choices for chart reporting, while “exponential growth” overstates the modest increase shown. There are also spelling errors, including “comparision” and “dramtically,” and “incline” is less suitable than “increase” as a noun here. Prefer standard terms such as “participants,” “attendance” and “rose steadily,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “while,” “but” and “although”-type contrasts, and the overall meaning is usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, “it can be seen the number” needs “that,” and “The film club had a 65 members” has an incorrect article and plural construction. In “while that number declined to 60 in 2010, it rose back,” the clauses are joined awkwardly and would be clearer as separate sentences or with a more controlled contrast. Subject–verb agreement is also inconsistent in “The number … were initially the same.” Work on articles, agreement, and punctuation in longer sentences while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
