Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graph illustrates participants involved in various activities in a social center in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, the film club had the highest number of participants followed by martial arts and the pattern was consistent throughout the years. Moreover, table tennis initially had a plateau but showed a dramatic growth from 2010 to 2020. The musical performances started having participants from 2005 and saw a gradual increase. In contrast, amateur dramatics saw a decline from 2005 onwards.

The film club had the highest enrollments in 2000 with approximately 63 participants with a slight decline to 60 in 2010 but again increased to around 64 in number by 2020. Martial arts had the second highest number of people in 2000, starting from around 36. A slight variation was observed from 30 to 39 over these years.

Amateur dramatics rose from 28 individuals in 2000 to 29 in 2005 but later declined sharply to 20 in 2010 to around 12 in 2015 and finally to less than 10 in 2020. An opposite trend was observed in table tennis which started from approximately 18 people in 2000 to 20 in 2005, plateaued in 2010 where it had the similar figure as amateur dramatics (20) and saw a sharp rise to around 36 in 2015, crossing martial arts to above 50 in 2020. Musical performances only began from 2005 and increased with the range from 11 to 20 participants within these years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main patterns clearly: the film club remains the largest activity, table tennis rises sharply, and amateur dramatics declines. The response also compares activities, including table tennis overtaking martial arts by 2020. Most figures are close to the chart, and the overview gives a useful summary. A few details are inaccurate or over-generalised: musical performances begin in 2010, not 2005; the film club ends at about 66 rather than 64; and amateur dramatics starts at about 26, not 28. The claim that the film club’s lead over martial arts was consistent is broadly true, but the overview could more precisely highlight table tennis becoming the second-largest activity by 2020. More exact reporting of these key changes would strengthen an otherwise well-supported summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, with a generally clear progression from the overall picture to individual series. Comparisons such as “An opposite trend was observed in table tennis” help connect related information. This clear structure is a strength. However, some linking and reference choices are less precise: “within these years” does not clearly identify the period for musical performances, and the long table-tennis sentence combines several stages and comparisons, making the information harder to follow. The overview also groups the activities in a way that misses the change in table tennis’s ranking by 2020. To make cohesion more flexible and precise, separate dense comparisons and use explicit time references when describing each trend.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of trend vocabulary, including “slight decline,” “gradual increase,” “plateaued,” “sharp rise” and “crossing,” which allows you to describe changes and comparisons clearly. There is also some variation in how participants are referred to. At times, however, word choice or collocation is imprecise: “highest enrollments” is less natural for participant numbers, and “started having participants” is awkward. “Had a plateau” is also less idiomatic than describing the figures as remaining stable. Some expressions, such as “a slight variation was observed,” are vague and do not convey the specific fluctuations in martial arts. Aim for concise, conventional chart language and use precise verbs such as “remained,” “fluctuated” and “reached” to improve naturalness and accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of sentence forms, including complex clauses and contrast structures: “In contrast, amateur dramatics saw a decline…” and “An opposite trend was observed in table tennis…” are clear examples. Many sentences are grammatically controlled, and the meaning remains easy to follow. A few errors and awkward constructions persist. In “The musical performances started having participants from 2005,” the phrasing creates an unclear time relationship; the chart’s start year should also be expressed accurately. “Plateaued in 2010 where it had the similar figure” has an unsuitable relative construction and article use; “at which point it had a similar figure” would be clearer. The final sentence’s “increased with the range from 11 to 20” is also structurally awkward. Continue varying sentence patterns while checking articles, clause links and parallel phrasing.
