Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line chart illustrates the details regarding the number of people participating across a range of activities at an Australian social centre in Melbourne from 2000 to 2020.
On the whole, it is evident that the initial years were not having much participants, whereas a gradual progress is seen in the public participation with the passage of time. Additionally, the Musical performances were not even having a single participant in the starting years but all the activities had been seen actively performed in the final 2020 year.
Regarding the activities which require the public attraction, it is clearly seen that the Film Club consistently attracted the highest participants ranging between 60 to 70 each year, whereas the Musical performances which initially started with zero participant in 2000 had been seen to make progress gradually and finally recorded around 15 participants in the 2020. Conversely, the Amateur dramatics had experienced a continuous decline from roughly 27 participants in 2000 to 7 participants in 2020.
When looking at the remaining activities, a different pattern had been seen. Martial arts is the only activity which had maintained its consistent progress throughout the whole period as it's participants remained at average between 30 and 40. Finally, tabel tennis sport also made a remarkable progress as the time went by. It initally attracted average of 10 to 20 participants in the years from 2000 to 2010 and then got a sudden increase in participants in the next years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main patterns and make relevant comparisons: the film club remains the most popular, amateur dramatics declines, and table tennis rises markedly. The overview also notes that musical performances begin at zero and increase. These features support a clear summary of the graph. However, some statements are inaccurate or too broad: participation was not generally low at the start, since the film club already had about 64 participants, and not all activities were “actively performed” in 2020, as musical performances had only around 18 participants. The claim that martial arts maintained “consistent progress” is also misleading; its figures fluctuate around 32–38. Including the table-tennis endpoint and describing the overall ranking more precisely would make the coverage more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to two groups of activities. Phrases such as “On the whole,” “Conversely,” and “When looking at the remaining activities” help signal the organisation, and the reader can follow the broad comparisons. Some links, however, are mechanical or do not accurately express the relationship between ideas. “Regarding the activities which require the public attraction” does not clearly introduce the film club and musical performances, while “Finally” is used for table tennis even though it is not the final point in a fully developed comparison. The overview also combines several claims without a clear hierarchy. Grouping the strongest rises and falls together, then comparing the more stable series, would create smoother progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “consistently attracted,” “continuous decline,” “remarkable progress,” and “sudden increase.” These choices help describe trends, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several collocations and word forms are unnatural or imprecise, such as “public attraction,” “made progress in the public participation,” and “maintained its consistent progress” for a series that fluctuates. There are also spelling errors in “tabel” and “initally,” and repeated use of “participants” and “progress” limits flexibility. Aim for precise chart language such as “attendance,” “rose sharply,” “remained relatively stable,” and “fell steadily.” More accurate collocations and careful proofreading would make the vocabulary more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “whereas,” “but,” and “as the time went by,” and most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless recur. For example, “were not having much participants” has an incorrect verb construction and plural agreement; “the Musical performances were not even having a single participant” is awkwardly formed; and “it's participants” uses the wrong possessive form. Articles and number are also inconsistent in phrases such as “in the 2020 year” and “average between 30 and 40.” Tense choices shift between past and present when describing the historical data. Use the past simple consistently, check singular/plural agreement, and build shorter, controlled comparisons before adding more complex clauses.
