Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graphs show the numbers of people who participanted in five activities-Film club, Martial arts, Amateur dramatics, Table tennis and Musical performances in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, it is evident that more people were interested in Film club over the given course of time. The number of participants in Table tennis and Musical performances saw a dramatic increase after a certain time, while the number of people taking interest in Amateur dramatics started to decreas dramatically at one point.
In the year 2000, about 63 people joined Film club which was the highest number and this number stayed within approximately 68 people till 2020. A similar trend was seen for Martial Arts where the number of participants fluctuated between about 35 to 38 participants from 2000 to 2020.
Although, Table tennis and Musical performances had an initial number of participants of about 15 and 0 in the year 2000, both of them saw a dramatic increase in the years 2010 and 2005 respectively. The numbers reached approximately 55 and 18 for Table tennis and Musical performances in 2020, respectively. However the only activity to decline in terms of number of participants was Amateur dramatics which although started with roughly 16 participants, started to see a sharp decline in 2005 and reached about 5 participants by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall patterns: Film Club remains the largest activity, table tennis rises substantially, musical performances grow from zero, and amateur dramatics declines. Several figures are also close to the chart, including table tennis reaching about 55 and musical performances about 18 in 2020. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. Film Club is described as staying within 68 participants, whereas it remains around 60–66; amateur dramatics begins at about 26, not 16; and the claim that musical performances increased in 2005 is incorrect, as they remain at zero until 2010. The overview is relevant, but the account of changes over time is uneven. Report the starting and ending values more accurately and distinguish when each trend begins.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the activities. This makes the information easy to follow, and contrast markers such as “Although” and “However” help signal relationships between trends. The grouping of Film Club and martial arts, followed by the other three activities, is also sensible. To make the progression more controlled, avoid packing several comparisons and time points into one long sentence, as in the final paragraph. Some linking is slightly mechanical, and punctuation around transitions is inconsistent. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each figure directly to the trend it supports; this would build on the coherent organisation already present and make comparisons more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “fluctuated,” “dramatic increase,” “sharp decline,” and “participants.” These choices communicate the main patterns, and the activity names are generally handled clearly. However, some wording is repetitive or imprecise: “number of people taking interest” is less natural than a concise description of participation, while “dramatically” is repeated and “stayed within approximately 68 people” does not accurately express the Film Club trend. There are also word-form and spelling slips, including “participanted” and “decreas.” Aim for more precise trend language and check spelling and collocations. A broader set of accurate verbs would help you describe rises, falls, and fluctuations without repetition.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a clear overview sentence and clauses beginning with “Although” and “while.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors are present. For example, “Although, Table tennis…” uses an unnecessary comma after the subordinating conjunction, and “which although started with roughly 16 participants, started to see…” has an awkward, difficult-to-follow clause structure. There are also missing spaces after full stops and inconsistent capitalisation of activity names. Practise separating long sentences and placing subordinate clauses more carefully. More consistent punctuation and cleaner clause construction would improve accuracy while preserving the range of structures you already attempt.
