Student answer (Band 7.0)

The graph provides data on the amount of individuals who participated in various events at a single social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, the number of participants fluctuated gradually over the years for two activities. Furthermore, some activities had witnessed a significant jump, while others experienced a decline, and one remained consistently popular.

To begin with, film club was the most famous activity through the period. In 2000, it had around 64 participants. Their numbers decreased slightly to just below 60 in 2010, before bounced back to around 66 by 2020. Furthermore, the martial arts activity had approximately 37 participants in 2000 before decline to around 36 in 2005. It rose to their peak in 2010, which was just below 40 and then return to approximately 36 in 2020.

Moreover, the table tennis activity had significant jump, beginning with just around 17 participants in 2000. It soared to around 53 by 2020, outclassed all other activities in terms of jump rate. Furthermore, the amateur dramatic saw a serious decline from around 25 number in 2000 to approximately 7 participant. And the musical performances had no participants till 2005, after which it slowly gained popularity, which rose to around 15 participants by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response covers all five activities and gives a clear overview of the main patterns: film club remains popular, table tennis rises markedly, amateur dramatics declines, and musical performances grow after starting at zero. Most figures and trends are accurately reported, including film club’s slight dip and recovery and table tennis’s rise to about 53. The overview is somewhat general, however: it says two activities fluctuated without identifying both, and “some activities had witnessed a significant jump” could be more precise. The comparison that table tennis “outclassed all other activities in terms of jump rate” is relevant, but the response could better highlight that it overtakes martial arts by 2015 and becomes the second-largest activity by 2020. More selective comparisons would strengthen the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information is arranged clearly, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group the activities into related trends. The progression from film club and martial arts to table tennis, amateur dramatics, and musical performances is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “To begin with,” and “Moreover” help signal stages in the response, and references to dates make the account coherent. At times, however, “Furthermore” is repeated and does not always express a meaningful relationship between points. The final paragraph also moves through three activities in quick succession, so the comparisons are less developed. Use a wider range of precise links and group the rising and falling series more deliberately.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

There is an adequate range for describing trends, including “decreased slightly,” “bounced back,” “soared,” and “serious decline.” These choices make the main movements clear, and the response uses relevant terms such as “participants” and “period.” Some less common or emphatic expressions are not well matched to an objective graph summary: “most famous” describes reputation rather than participation, while “outclassed” is informal and imprecise here. There are also awkward collocations and word forms, including “amount of individuals,” “the amateur dramatic,” and “around 25 number.” Aim for natural, precise reporting language and consistent labels for activities; this would retain the range already attempted while improving accuracy and style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and more complex structures, including a time clause in “before bounced back” and a relative clause in “which was just below 40.” Most meanings remain clear, and the opening and overview sentences are controlled. Some errors in verb forms and agreement remain: “before bounced back” needs a subject and a correctly formed verb, “before decline” should be “before declining,” and “It rose to their peak” has unclear pronoun agreement. The phrase “which rose to around 15” also has an unclear reference. These errors do not generally prevent understanding, but they limit grammatical control. Check that each clause has a clear subject and that tense and pronouns remain consistent when describing past data.
