Student answer (Band 6.0)
The graph illustrates information on the participants number for five different activities at one social centre located in Melbourne, Australia for the tenure 2000 to 2020.
Overall, different social centres had indicated irregular trends throughout the years, with film participants having the maximum number of participants as compared to other activities, and table tennis had the lowest value of the participants.
Film club participants at the start, in year 2000, were around 63, then reduced slightly to 62, by year 2010, and by year 2020, it became approximately 66. On the other hand, amateur dramatics had 25 participants in year 2000, the number increased a little in year 2005, then faced significant fall from year 2005, to 2010.
Martial arts had around 36 number of participants in year 2000, then decreased to near 30 in year 2005, then increased slightly to 38 in year 2010, fell to 33 in year 2015, rose to 36 by year 2020. However, table tennis participants were around 15 in year 2000, Increased to about 20 in 2005, Increased considerably to 53 by year 2020. Musical performances had the least number of participants in years 2000, and, 2005, but then increased in a stable manner from year 2010 to 2020, as the number changed from 10 to 15 in these years respectively.
Film club had the highest amount of participants in year 2020, while musical performance had the least in years 2000, and 2005. Martial arts, amateur dramatics and table tennis had different numbers in different year, followed by irregular trends.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main series and report several relevant changes, including film club’s consistently high figures, the rise in table tennis, and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, the overview contains a significant misreading: table tennis did not have the lowest participation overall, and musical performances were lowest at the beginning. Some trends are also incompletely reported. For example, amateur dramatics falls from about 28 in 2005 to 6 in 2020, but the response stops its account at 2010; table tennis rises notably from 20 in 2010 to 54 in 2020, a key stage omitted. The final generalisation about “irregular trends” is vague. A more accurate overview and fuller coverage of the major changes would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the activities. This gives the reader a basic route through the information, and linking phrases such as “On the other hand” and “However” help signal contrasts. However, progression is weakened by repeating the overview at the end and by grouping several series together without a clear comparison. The account of table tennis jumps from 2005 directly to 2020, while the amateur dramatics description is left incomplete, making the selection of details feel uneven. Some connectors are also used mechanically or do not express a clear contrast. Organise the body around the main patterns—stable/high figures, rising figures, and declining figures—and use the conclusion space for a concise, accurate overview rather than repetition.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “reduced slightly,” “increased considerably,” “fell,” and “rose.” These choices make most of the data understandable, and you attempt more formal phrasing such as “illustrates information.” However, several expressions are unnatural or imprecise, including “participants number,” “for the tenure,” “had indicated irregular trends,” and “highest amount of participants.” Repetition of “number of participants” and “increased” also limits flexibility. Choose standard collocations such as “number of participants,” “over the period,” “fluctuated,” and “the highest figure.” More precise trend vocabulary would also help distinguish a gradual rise from a sharp increase, especially when describing table tennis.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the meaning remains clear. For example, the sentence beginning “Martial arts had around 36…” links several changes across the period, while “although” or “whereas” could help create more controlled comparisons. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in noun phrases and sentence construction: “the participants number” should be “the number of participants,” and “Film club participants … were around 63” would be clearer as “There were around 63 participants in the film club.” There are also inconsistent capitalisation and punctuation, such as “Increased” mid-sentence and commas separating “2000, and 2005.” Aim for accurate, consistent past-tense reporting and divide long sequences of figures into well-punctuated sentences.
