Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph depicts information from one social centre in Melbourne, Australia about the number of participants interested in different activities between 2000 to 2020.

Overall chart suggests that the film club has the highest participants throughout whole time. Conversely, amateur dramatics attracted least people by year 2020.

Film club has always done better in terms of participants. It started from above 60 participants in 2000. Despite experiencing a slight downfall until 2010, it managed to maintain its figure by 2020 with almost the same number of participants.

Martial arts has experienced heavy fluctuation throughout the period. It started from above 35 and remained same at the end after some inconsistent figures in between. Amateur dramatics declined sharply after 2005. A steady downfall leads the number from just below 30 to almost 5 by 2020. On the contrary, table tennis started from approximately 15 participants in 2000 but it hit a dramatic hike in terms of participants. By 2020, it reached up to little over 50. Musical journey started from 2005 only but a consistent rise in number of participants can be seen until 2020 which is approximately 20.

To conclude, participants for film club were high throughout the period but amateur dramatics interest is declining sharply.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main overall pattern accurately: the film club remains the most popular activity, while amateur dramatics falls to the lowest level by 2020. You also report the major changes in table tennis and musical performances, including table tennis’s sharp rise and the latter’s steady growth. Most figures and trends match the graph. To make the account more fully developed, include clearer comparisons at key points—for example, table tennis rises to 54 and overtakes martial arts by 2015, while film club ends at 66. The statement that the film club maintained “almost the same number” is broadly true but could be more precise, since it dips to 60 before recovering. Overall, the response selects relevant features and supports them with data, though some comparisons are generalised.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph describing the activities, and a concluding sentence. The sequence is generally easy to follow, and contrasts such as “On the contrary” help distinguish table tennis from amateur dramatics. However, the final “To conclude” repeats the overview rather than adding a useful comparison, and the long middle paragraph moves rapidly between four series. Grouping the declining and rising activities separately, or using clearer transitions between each series, would make the progression more controlled. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “started” and “by 2020.” The organisation is coherent, but cohesion and paragraph development are not consistently flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “slight downfall,” “heavy fluctuation,” “declined sharply,” “dramatic hike,” and “consistent rise.” These choices make the main movements clear, and the meaning is generally understandable. Some expressions are imprecise or unnatural for formal data reporting: “has always done better” is vague, “hit a dramatic hike” is an awkward collocation, and “Musical journey” is not an appropriate label for the series. “Participants interested in” also shifts the meaning slightly from the graph’s count of participants. Aim for precise, conventional trend language and repeat the activity names where needed rather than using an unclear substitute. This would improve accuracy and control while retaining your useful range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses such as “Despite experiencing a slight downfall…” and “On the contrary…”. Most sentences communicate the intended trend clearly. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. The opening says “between 2000 to 2020”; use “between 2000 and 2020” or “from 2000 to 2020.” In “Overall chart suggests,” the article is missing, and “the film club has the highest participants” has an awkward grammatical construction. Tense control is also uneven: the graph describes a completed period, so “Film club has always done better” would be more appropriately expressed in the past. Review articles, comparative constructions, and consistent past-tense reporting. These corrections would make the varied sentence forms more reliable.
