Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graph illustrates the information about number of individuals participated in different activites in Melbourne, australia from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that film club had most participants followed by martial arts. However, musical performances had least of them all.

Firstly, film club started with 65 individuals in 2000 and it fell downward from 65 to 60 in 2010. Data of martial arts fluctuats till 2020 from 2000 although it stayed between 30 to 40. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify several important patterns, including film club’s consistently high participation, table tennis’s strong rise, and the decline in amateur dramatics. Most figures you give are close to the chart. However, the overview is incomplete and partly inaccurate: musical performances did not have the fewest participants throughout the period, since they rose to about 18 by 2020, while amateur dramatics fell to around 6. The response also omits this later rise in musical performances and does not report the film club’s recovery after 2010. The length check confirms that the response is one word below the required minimum. To make the summary more complete, include the main changes across all five activities and ensure the overview reflects the end-of-period rankings.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the data. Sequencing words such as “Firstly” and “Moreover” help signal movement between points, and the reader can generally follow the comparisons. However, progression is uneven: the overview gives a broad ranking but does not prepare the reader for the later rise in musical performances, and that series is left without a complete account. Some linking is mechanical, while “In table tennis started…” creates an awkward transition and makes the sentence difficult to follow. Grouping the series by their main trends, then using clear comparisons within each paragraph, would make the organisation more purposeful and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “participants,” “rose,” “increased substantially,” and “fell,” so the main trends are usually understandable. There is also some variation in how changes are described. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are unnatural, such as “had most participants,” “had least of them all,” and “fell downward.” Spelling errors in “activites,” “australia,” and “fluctuats” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, conventional chart language and check spelling carefully; for example, describe a series as having the highest or lowest number of participants, and say that a figure declined or remained within a range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “before” and “after,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, control is inconsistent, particularly in sentence construction and verb forms. “The graph illustrates the information about number of individuals participated” is missing grammatical elements, while “In table tennis started…” has no clear subject. In “Data of martial arts fluctuats,” the subject–verb construction is faulty, and the final amateur-dramatics sentence combines several ideas without clear grammatical links. Use complete subject–verb sentences, check articles and verb forms, and divide sentences when several stages of a trend are being described.
