Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the proportion of participants for five distinct activities over almost 20 years, starting from 2000 to 2020. In addition, the participants shown in this graph are from an social centre situated in Melbourne, Australia.

A close analysis of this diagram reveals that the most performed activity is film club, while the least performed activity is musical performances which was introduced in 2005 at that social centre.

The fun club activities accounted for over 60% of participants and remained consistent over the years. Apart from activities of the film club, other activities such as - martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tannis were famous as well but not as much as the film club. However, amateur dramatics showed a dramatic fall in 2005 and reached less than 5% of participants in 2020. Besides that, table tennis experienced a significant increase and rose to approximately 55% in 2020. Musical performances, which had been introduced since 2005 depicted a gradual increase over the years.

Throughout the 21 years, activies of the film club remained at peak while other activies fluctuated since popularity of those often experienced either fall or rise among the participants.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall pattern: the film club remains the most popular activity, table tennis rises substantially, and amateur dramatics declines. Several figures are broadly accurate, including table tennis reaching about 55 participants and amateur dramatics falling to around 6 by 2020. However, the response sometimes misrepresents the data: the graph shows numbers of participants, not proportions or percentages, so phrases such as “over 60%” and “less than 5%” are inaccurate. Musical performances began at zero in 2000, rather than being introduced in 2005, and the claim that amateur dramatics fell dramatically in 2005 overlooks its later, sharper decline. More precise comparisons across the period would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details and a concluding summary. This gives the reader a general sense of the report’s direction. However, progression between points is sometimes unclear: the second paragraph calls musical performances the least popular, while the later discussion does not clearly distinguish their low starting point from their position in 2020. Linking phrases such as “Apart from” and “Besides that” are used, but some connections feel mechanical or do not express the relationship precisely. The final paragraph largely repeats the overview rather than adding a useful comparison. Grouping the activities by trend—stable, rising, and falling—would create clearer progression and reduce repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “remained consistent,” “dramatic fall,” “significant increase,” and “gradual increase.” These choices help communicate the broad patterns. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however. “Proportion” and the repeated “%” incorrectly suggest percentages, while “most performed activity” is not a natural way to describe participation. “Fun club activities” appears to be an unintended substitution for “film club,” and “table tannis” and “activies” contain spelling errors. “Famous” also does not accurately describe participation levels. Use standard chart language such as “number of participants,” “most popular activity,” and “rose to” to improve precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while” and “which,” and most of the meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors persist. For example, “from an social centre” needs the article “a,” and “musical performances … which was introduced” has a number-agreement problem because the activity name is plural. The opening phrase “starting from 2000 to 2020” uses an incorrect range construction; “from 2000 to 2020” would be more accurate. In “the most performed activity is film club,” the article is missing before “film club.” Review articles, agreement, and parallel phrasing, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
