Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram illustrates the data on the number of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period of 2000 to 2020.

Overall, film club had the highest number of participants and remained on the top among other activities. However, other activities had the significant number of participants fluctuating over the years except musical performances.

In 2000, film club showed 64 number of participants following a slight decrease in 2010, before it went up moderately in 2020. Martial arts showed fluctuations over the years starting with 38 number of participants in 2000 and ended with 37 participants in 2020.

From 2000 to 2005, amateur dramatics depicted a slight increase then showed dramatic drop in the year 2020. Table tennis started with 17 number of participants in 2000 and reached to 19 number of competitors then showed a tremendous rise in number of people marking around 50 in 2020.

In contrast, musical performances was the only activity which showed a gradual climb from 2005 to 2020 with no noticeable drop.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall pattern that the film club remained the most popular activity, and you report several relevant trends, including the sharp rise in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, some figures and comparisons are inaccurate: martial arts began at about 36, not 38, and finished at 36, rather than 37; table tennis reached about 54 in 2020, not 50. The overview also says that other activities fluctuated, but amateur dramatics declined steadily after 2005 and table tennis rose strongly, while musical performances increased from 2010, not 2005. The response covers the chart, but some key features are not fully or precisely described. Select the most important contrasts and report their trends accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs describing the activities. Time markers such as “In 2000,” “From 2000 to 2005,” and “In contrast” help the reader follow the account. However, the grouping of information is not always logical: film club and martial arts are discussed together, then amateur dramatics and table tennis, without a clear principle for these pairings. The overview’s broad statement that activities fluctuated also conflicts with the more specific trends that follow. Some linking phrases, such as “then” and “before,” make the sequence understandable but do not always clarify comparisons. Group the series by their main patterns and use the overview to guide the order of details.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of chart vocabulary, including “fluctuations,” “slight decrease,” “dramatic drop,” “gradual climb,” and “tremendous rise.” These choices help communicate changes over time, and the meaning is generally clear. Some expressions are imprecise or do not collocate naturally, however: “64 number of participants,” “reached to 19 number of competitors,” and “remained on the top” are awkward. “Competitors” is also not the right term for people taking part in an activity; “participants” is more accurate. Aim for concise, conventional reporting phrases such as “stood at 64,” “rose to 20,” and “remained the most popular.” This would make the description more precise and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast structure “before it went up” and the relative clause “which showed a gradual climb.” Most sentences communicate the intended trends, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “film club showed 64 number of participants” needs a different sentence pattern, and “musical performances was” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “From 2000 to 2005, amateur dramatics depicted a slight increase then showed dramatic drop,” the article is missing before “dramatic drop,” and the two actions would be clearer with punctuation or a conjunction. Continue varying sentence structures, while checking agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
