Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the significant number of people who are taking part in various activities at a social centre in a city in Australia (Melbourne) over 20 years, particularly between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, there is a substantial increase in the number of participants in table tennis from 2000 to 2020, whereas this figure declined dramatically in amateur dramatics over the same period. However, participants in film club and martial arts rose to some extent, and it grew slightly in the case of musical performances.

Initially, participants in film club were 65 in 2000, then expereinced slightly decreased and increased trend, and then rose to around 66 in 2020. Table tennis and participants were 17 in 2000 and increased substantially to nearly 55 in 2020. In terms of musical performances, this figure also climbed from 0 to 15 over the same period.

In contrast, in Amateur dramatics, this trend fell dramatically from 27 to 5 participants between 2000 and 2020. Meanwhile, it remained stable in martial arts at around 37 to 38 over the following period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall contrast accurately: table tennis rises markedly, while amateur dramatics declines, and you also mention the film club and musical performances. Most figures are close to the chart, including the film club’s ending level and table tennis’s increase. However, the overview says film club and martial arts “rose,” although film club first fell and martial arts fluctuated around a broadly stable level. The description of martial arts as stable is useful, but its range is unclear, and the film-club changes are not explained precisely. To strengthen the report, distinguish overall trends from fluctuations and include the notable point that table tennis overtakes martial arts by 2015 and becomes the second-largest activity by 2020.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear four-part structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs grouping the activities. This makes the main comparisons easy to locate, and transitions such as “Overall” and “In contrast” help signal the organisation. Some connections are less clear, however. In “Table tennis and participants were 17,” the relationship between the activity and its figure is awkward, while “this trend” in the final paragraph does not clearly identify the series being discussed. The overview also groups film club and martial arts as rising, which weakens the progression because their patterns differ. Use clearer topic sentences and refer directly to each activity when moving between trends.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of trend vocabulary, including “substantial increase,” “declined dramatically,” “climbed,” and “remained stable,” which communicates the broad patterns. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, such as “significant number” for describing the graph, “increased and increased trend,” and “Table tennis and participants.” The spelling error “expereinced” also detracts from accuracy. In addition, “rose to some extent” does not describe martial arts well, since its figures fluctuate rather than rise overall. Aim for precise collocations such as “the number of participants,” “fluctuated,” and “experienced a slight decline before recovering.” This would make the vocabulary more natural and better suited to data reporting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the contrast clause beginning “whereas” and the time phrase “between 2000 and 2020.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “participants in film club were 65” needs a clearer subject such as “the number of film-club participants was 65,” and “then expereinced slightly decreased and increased trend” has faulty verb and noun construction. In “it grew slightly in the case of musical performances,” the pronoun reference is also unclear. Practise forming accurate subject–verb patterns for figures and trends, and check agreement and pronoun references when combining clauses.
