IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line chart illustrates the number of participants enrolled in different activities at a social center in Melbourne between 2000 and 2020. Overall, the number of participants in table tennis experienced considerable growth, while the figure for amateur dramatics dropped throughout the period, despite its initial rise. One noticeable feature is that the film club preferred by most people consistently over the years.
Film club, which recorded most participants hovered between 60 and 65 before reaching almost 65 at the end of 2020. Table tennis and musical performance witnessed steady rise, from over 15 in 2000 to 50 in 2020 and the later started its count in only 2005 which then increased to roughly 15.
In 2000, amateur dramatics started at roughly 25 participants then had a steady decrease from 26 to just below 5 in 2020. Martial arts experienced fluctuations in the count before reaching 35 particpants in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main overall contrast accurately: table tennis rises substantially, amateur dramatics declines, and the film club remains the most popular activity. Several figures are also broadly correct, including film-club participation staying around 60–66 and amateur dramatics ending at about six. This meets the task well, but some details are incomplete or imprecise. Table tennis did not rise steadily: it was level at about 20 between 2005 and 2010, then climbed sharply to 54. Musical performances began in 2010, not 2005, and increased from 12 to 18; the response gives a different starting point and understates the final figure. The overview and relevant comparisons are present, but more precise reporting of these changes would strengthen coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs describing the activities. The main trends are generally easy to follow, and sequencing phrases such as “Overall” and “In 2000” help orient the reader. However, some links between ideas are awkward or unclear. For example, “One noticeable feature is that the film club preferred by most people consistently over the years” does not form a clear sentence, and “the later started its count” makes the reference to musical performances difficult to follow. The second body paragraph also groups several series without fully distinguishing their changes. Use clearer topic sentences and explicit comparisons, and ensure pronouns and references point unambiguously to the activity being discussed.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “considerable growth,” “dropped,” “fluctuations,” and “reaching.” These choices communicate the broad patterns and show some flexibility beyond basic terms. Some word combinations and choices are less natural or precise, however: “the film club preferred by most people” is unclear, while “witnessed steady rise” does not accurately describe table tennis, which remained stable before rising sharply. “The later” is also an incorrect choice for referring to the second activity, and “particpants” is misspelled. Aim for precise trend language and natural collocations, such as “remained the most popular,” “rose sharply,” and “the latter.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
There is a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the clause “which then increased.” Most of the intended meaning can be understood, but some grammatical errors make individual sentences awkward. In “Film club, which recorded most participants hovered,” the relative clause is not integrated correctly; write, for example, “The film club, which recorded the highest participation, hovered…” The sentence beginning “One noticeable feature is that…” is also missing a grammatical structure after “that.” There are further issues with articles and noun forms, as in “witnessed steady rise” and “the later started its count.” More consistent control of clause construction, articles, and sentence boundaries would improve accuracy while retaining the range of structures attempted.
