Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph illustrates the changes of number of participants for various activities at one social centre in Melbourne, from 2000 to 2020. Overall, the number of partcipants in table tennis club increased, while the number of participants in amateur deamatics decreased. The most noticeable factor is that number of participants at film club and at martial arts remained steadly through out the period.

At the beginning, table tennis was at 15 participants in 2000. It increased to 20 participants in 2005 and remained stable till 2010. The number of participants incresed drastically from 2010 to 2020. Finally reached to 50 participants in 2020. In comparision, amateur deamatics started at 25 participants, it increased to 30 participants in 2005. Suddenly fall down to 20 participants in 2010. The number of participants sink over the years. At the end it stood at nearly 8 participants.

Looking at film club and martial arts, figures of both had nearly similar slope. Film clud had 65 participants, while martial art had 35 participant in 2000. The numbers changed slightly but at the end in 2020, film club had same 65 participants. However, amateur dreamatic also had same numbers as it had in the beginning which was 35 participants.

However, musical performances started from 2005 and had zero participants. In the year 2010 it reached to 11 number of participants, this was followed by 15 participants in year 2015 at the ending it reached to 20 participants.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You cover all five activities and identify the main contrast between rising table-tennis participation and declining amateur dramatics. You also note that film-club and martial-arts figures change relatively little, and give supporting figures for several years. However, some reporting is inaccurate or unclear: film-club participation ends at about 66, not the same 65 as at the start; martial arts ends at about 36, not 35; and the final comparison mistakenly says amateur dramatics had 35 participants, confusing it with martial arts. Table tennis rises to about 54, rather than 50. The overview would be stronger if it highlighted table tennis as the sharpest rise and musical performances’ growth from zero, while checking the end-point comparisons carefully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs on table tennis and amateur dramatics, the steadier series, and musical performances. This grouping helps the reader follow the chart. However, progression is weakened by abrupt or repetitive links such as “In comparison,” “Looking at,” and repeated “However,” including a final “However” that does not express a clear contrast. Some sentences are joined awkwardly, for example, “In comparison, amateur deamatics started at 25 participants, it increased…” and “Finally reached to 50 participants.” Use clearer sentence boundaries and organise comparisons consistently—for example, group the two declining/strongly rising series, then the relatively stable ones and the new activity. This would make the relationships between details easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “increased,” “remained stable,” “decreased,” and “stood at,” so the reader can understand the broad trends. There is some attempt at variation with “drastically,” “sink,” and “reached.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing data: “same slope” is not the right way to say the figures followed similar patterns, and “fall down” and “sink” are less suitable than “fell” or “declined.” Spelling errors such as “partcipants,” “deamatics,” “incresed,” and “comparision” are noticeable, while “film clud” and “amateur dreamatic” also obscure labels. Check activity names and use precise trend collocations consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including a contrast clause beginning “while” and time clauses such as “from 2010 to 2020.” However, errors recur in sentence construction and control. For example, “The number of participants incresed drastically… Finally reached to 50” leaves the second sentence without a clear subject, while “amateur deamatics started at 25 participants, it increased…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma. Articles and number forms are also inconsistent: “at film club,” “at the ending,” and “35 participant.” Use complete sentences with clear subjects, separate clauses with a full stop or suitable conjunction, and check articles and singular/plural agreement. These corrections would make the comparisons more accurate and easier to read.
