Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the chart’s subject and gives a brief overview, correctly noting that the film club had the highest participation throughout and reporting its approximate starting figure. However, the overview contains a major factual error: amateur dramatics did not increase; it fell markedly, from about 26 to 6. The account then stops after describing the 2000 figures for film club and martial arts, so it omits the main changes across the period, including table tennis’s sharp rise and musical performances’ later growth. The response is also well below the required 150 words. To address the task more fully, report the key trends and comparisons across all five activities, using selected figures to support them.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a basic, understandable structure: an introduction, an overview beginning “Overall,” and a detail paragraph introduced by “Looking into the details.” These markers help the reader recognise the stages of the response. However, the progression is incomplete: the final paragraph gives only two starting values and does not move through the years or cover the other activities, leaving the report without a developed comparison. The reference words “former” and “latter” are understandable, but the paragraph’s limited content makes the relationships between trends unclear. Organise the details into a logical comparison of rising, falling and relatively stable activities, and use linking phrases to guide the reader through changes over time.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant chart vocabulary, including “numbers,” “figure,” “throughout the period” and “approximately,” and the intended meaning is generally recoverable. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “line chat,” “highst,” “amateure” and “flim” appear in place of standard forms. “Wider activities” is also an unclear description of the activities shown, while “interested in” is less precise than language describing participation. Aim for accurate, task-specific terms and check spelling carefully. For example, describe the number of participants in each activity and use verbs such as “rose,” “declined” and “remained stable” to report trends clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes a few sentence patterns, such as the overview clause beginning “Overall, it can be seen that…” and the comparison using “whereas.” Most sentences remain simple, and there is limited evidence of a wider range of accurately controlled structures. Errors include subject–verb agreement in “people who participates” and “people participated,” as well as missing articles in “for latter.” The phrase “in sam period” also has an incorrect determiner, and “community centerin” lacks a space. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the basic message, but they make the writing less accurate. Practise plural agreement and article use, and build accurate sentences comparing changes between years.
