IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line chart illustrates the number of people who participate in a wider range of activities at one community center in Melbourne (Australia) from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, it can be seen that the number of people interested in the film club was the highest throughout the period whereas the figure for table tannis significantly increased in the same period of time.
Looking into the details, the number of people participating in film club and martial arts was unchanged with mild fluctuation. The figure for the former was at about 65 and for latter was approximately 35 from 2000 to 2020. Forthermore, no one interested in musical performances from 2000 to 2005 than the number of participater gradually increased until the terminal year and reached to a peak 20.
Delelving into the details, in 2000, the amount of table tannis players accounted at about 15, than it jumped up to just over 50 in 2020. In contrast, the figure for people who enjoyed amateure dramatics recorded near about 25. After 2005, it followed downward trend and reached at the lowest just over 10.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main overall contrast accurately: the film club remains the largest activity, while table tennis rises substantially. You also cover all five activities and report several relevant figures, including the decline in amateur dramatics and the later growth in musical performances. This gives the response a clear, relevant account of the chart. Some details, however, are imprecise or misleading: film club and martial arts were not unchanged, but fluctuated slightly, and musical performances reached about 18 rather than a peak of 20. The amateur dramatics figure in 2020 was about 6, not “just over 10.” To strengthen the overview and detail, distinguish stable series from changing ones and report the key end-point comparisons more precisely; the response already shows some selection of the chart’s main features but not consistently accurate development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs. The broad progression from the overall picture to individual activities helps the reader follow the report. However, the two detail paragraphs do not group the information as clearly as they could, and the repeated opener “Looking into the details” / “Delelving into the details” makes the organisation feel formulaic. Some links are also unclear: “than the number of participater gradually increased” does not clearly connect the zero figures to the later rise, while “After 2005, it followed downward trend” requires the reader to infer that “it” means amateur dramatics. Grouping stable or fluctuating series together and rising and falling series together, with precise references, would make progression smoother and cohesion less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of chart-reporting vocabulary, including “significantly increased,” “mild fluctuation,” “downward trend,” and “terminal year.” These choices show an attempt to describe change rather than simply list figures. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, such as “table tannis,” “Forthermore,” “Delelving,” “amateure,” and “participater.” Some collocations are also awkward: “the amount of table tannis players accounted at about 15” and “reached to a peak 20” are not natural ways to report participant numbers. Prefer accurate, consistent terms such as “number of participants,” “stood at,” and “rose to.” More careful spelling and more natural combinations would make the vocabulary clearer and more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “whereas” and a time clause beginning “After 2005.” The main message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “the number of people participating in film club and martial arts was unchanged” has a subject–verb agreement problem if the two activities are treated separately, and “for latter” is missing an article. The sentence “no one interested in musical performances from 2000 to 2005 than the number…” is structurally incomplete, and “reached at the lowest” uses an incorrect grammatical pattern. Work on complete clause construction, articles, agreement, and verb patterns such as “reached a low of” or “fell to.” Greater accuracy in these areas would make the varied sentence attempts more effective.
