IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph illustrates the participation of individuals having various activities at a busy centre of Melbourne over two decades from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the number of participants in the film club and martial arts remain nearly the same throughout the years, maintaining their first and third spot respectively. Table tennis experienced a significant rise to the second spot, whilst amateur dramatics saw a sharp decline and have the lowest spot.
Firstly, the individuals of film club and martial arts remain nearly the same at 63 and 38 over the span of these twenty years. However, in 2010 table tennis experienced a huge surge from 20 to 52 while amateur dramatics saw a sharp decline to nearly from 20 to almost 7 respectively. Musical performances have also seen a steady increase in participants from 0 in 2000 to almost 18 in 2020. Over all, film club dominated the graph while table tennis ascended to second spot from third and amateur dramatics fell from third spot in 2005 to fifth in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall patterns: film-club participation stays high, table tennis rises markedly, and amateur dramatics declines. The overview also notes the changing relative positions, which is relevant to the task. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate. The claim that table tennis surged “in 2010” from 20 to 52 misplaces the increase: it was around 20 in 2010 and rose to about 54 by 2020, with the sharpest growth after 2010. The comparison of film club and martial arts as remaining nearly the same is broadly sound, but their figures are presented as if constant rather than fluctuating. The amateur-dramatics sentence contains an incomplete comparison, leaving its figures difficult to interpret. More precise reporting of the stages and key values would strengthen coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to supporting details. The overview usefully groups the stable series, the rising series and the declining series. However, progression becomes less clear in the final paragraph: “However, in 2010 table tennis experienced a huge surge from 20 to 52” combines a year with a change that actually occurs later, disrupting the reader’s understanding of the timeline. The phrase “to nearly from 20 to almost 7 respectively” is also difficult to follow, and “Over all” repeats points already made. Use clearer chronological sequencing and separate comparisons into complete sentences. Cohesive links are present, but some are mechanical or do not accurately signal the relationship between the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of trend vocabulary, including “significant rise,” “sharp decline,” “steady increase,” “dominated” and “ascended.” These choices help communicate the broad patterns, and the meaning is generally clear. Some less common expressions are not used precisely or naturally: “maintaining their first and third spot” is awkward for describing rankings, while “huge surge” is somewhat informal and overstates the change at the point identified. “The individuals of film club” is also an unnatural way to refer to participant numbers. Greater precision in collocation and a more consistently formal register would build on the range already shown. Choose verbs that describe the actual scale and timing of change, rather than relying on emphatic wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including a contrast with “whilst” and a sentence beginning “Overall,” and most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors are noticeable, particularly in agreement and verb forms: “the number … remain” should be “remains,” and “amateur dramatics … have the lowest spot” should use a singular verb. The phrase “saw a sharp decline to nearly from 20 to almost 7 respectively” is structurally incomplete, making the comparison hard to interpret. There are also inconsistencies in tense when describing the graph, such as “have also seen” alongside past-tense reporting. Check subject–verb agreement and ensure comparative clauses contain a clear starting value, change and endpoint.
