Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of participants in different activities at the social centre in Melbourne, Australia, between 2000 and 2020.

To begin with, in 2000, the film club had 65 participants; after that, the number fell slightly. In 2010, it was 60 participants, and in 2020 it reached its highest at 68 participants; moreover, at the same time, in 2000, martial arts started at 15 participants and rose steadily; in 2010, it reached 20 participants

After that, it increased dramatically, reaching 55 participants in 2020. Furthermore, in the same year, in 2000, the Amateur Dramatics started at 25 participants and rose slightly in 2005; after that, it continued downwards in 2020 it was 10 participants. Lastly, in 2005, musical performances was started at 0; then it followed the same in 2020, it was 25 participants which was the lowest in the period

Overall, the film club had the highest at the end of the period, and amateur dramatics had the lowest by the end of the period

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies the chart’s subject and gives an overview that the film club finishes highest while amateur dramatics finishes lowest. However, the account only minimally reports the main features because several series are confused or inaccurately described. Martial arts began at about 36, not 15, and fluctuated around the mid-30s rather than rising to 55; that sharp increase belongs to table tennis, which is omitted entirely. Musical performances began in 2010, not 2005, and reached about 18 in 2020, not 25 or the lowest figure. The film-club figures are broadly close, and the decline in amateur dramatics is recognised, but the major comparisons and trends need to be selected and reported accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response, beginning with an introduction and ending with an overall statement. Sequencing expressions such as “To begin with,” “After that,” “Furthermore,” and “Lastly” show an effort to connect information. However, the body is largely one long, crowded paragraph, and the repeated “in the same year” makes it difficult to follow which activity and date are being discussed. The transition from martial arts to amateur dramatics is especially unclear, while the missing table-tennis series leaves the account without a balanced progression through the chart. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and grouped trends, and make each sentence’s subject explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to describe basic movements, with phrases such as “fell slightly,” “rose slightly,” “continued downwards,” and “reaching its highest.” These choices make the general direction of some lines understandable. However, the range is repetitive and several expressions are imprecise or awkward for describing a graph: “started at” is repeated, “followed the same” does not clearly express a trend, and “had the highest” is less natural than a precise comparison. The phrase “increased dramatically” is also applied to martial arts, although that series fluctuates rather than rising sharply. Aim for accurate trend vocabulary and use terms such as “fluctuated,” “declined steadily,” and “rose sharply” only where the data supports them.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response uses some simple past-tense clauses appropriately, for example, “the number fell slightly” and “it reached its highest.” There are also attempts to combine ideas with time clauses and linking words. However, sentence control is uneven, particularly in the long sequence beginning “in 2000, martial arts started…” and continuing through several dates without clear punctuation. Agreement errors appear in “musical performances was started,” and the construction “in 2020 it was 10 participants” is not well formed. The final overview also uses the awkward structure “had the highest.” Build shorter, complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement and punctuation when joining clauses.
