Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the chart’s subject and period, and it attempts an overall comparison by naming table tennis and amateur dramatics. However, the overview is not accurate: film club, not table tennis, has the highest participation throughout the period, while amateur dramatics is the lowest only by 2020, not across the whole period. No figures or meaningful changes are reported, so the main trends—such as table tennis rising sharply and amateur dramatics declining—are missing. The response also contains only 49 words, well below the required 150, leaving the task minimally addressed. To improve, write a clear overview and support it with selected figures and comparisons across the five activities.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: the first sentence introduces the graph, and the next begins an overview with “Overall”. This gives the reader a simple starting structure. However, the response stops before developing any sequence of details, so there is no progression from the overview to comparisons or supporting data. The transition “while” does not clearly connect the two claims, and the final fragment “meanw” interrupts the flow. Use separate paragraphs for an introduction, overview and key details, then connect comparisons explicitly—for example, contrast the steady film-club figures with the sharp rise in table tennis.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some relevant chart vocabulary, including “line graph”, “participant count” and the activity names, so its topic is generally recognisable. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “illustrates giving information” is awkward, “participant count” is less suitable than “number of participants”, and “Table tennis playing” does not express the activity naturally. “Melobourne” is misspelled, and “musical performance” does not match the chart’s plural label. The very short response also provides little evidence of range. Aim for precise, conventional Task 1 wording such as “compares participation in five activities” and “the number of participants in the film club”.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts a longer introductory sentence and an overview sentence, but grammatical control is uneven. In “The line graph illustrates giving information on the participant count…”, the verb pattern is faulty; a clearer structure would be “The line graph shows the number of participants…”. The overview, “Overall, the highest participants were Table tennis playing… while there were least common activity…”, has problems with articles, agreement and sentence construction, making the comparison difficult to follow. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with no space after “Overall,” and a full stop before a lower-case “while”. Because the response is so brief, it shows little range of sentence forms. Practise accurate simple comparisons before adding more complex clauses.
