Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph illustrates the numbers of participants who took part in five different activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, it is evident that participation in the film club remained the highest through the twenty-year period. In contrast, musical performance started with zero participants but saw an upward trend toward the end.
In 2000, the film club started was clearly the most p[opular figure among the activities, with around 65 participants. Its numbers stayed fairly stable, ending slightly higher at nearly 68 people in 2020. Marital arts started at 36 participants in 2000, it fluctuated slightly over the years, and finished back at 36 particpants in 2020.
Meanwhile, table tennis showed a significant growth, starting with just 16 people in 2000, it rose steadily and became the second most popular activity by 2020 with over 50 participants. Amateur darmatics started at 26 people, peaked at 28 in 2005, but then experienced a sharp decline, droping to just 6 participants by 2020. Finally, musical performance had no participants in 2000 and 2005, but then grew to reach nearly 20 participants in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response selects the main features and gives a clear overview: the film club remains the most popular, while musical performances rise from zero. It also accurately reports the major changes in table tennis and amateur dramatics, including table tennis reaching over 50 and amateur dramatics falling to 6. The figures are generally well supported, though the film club’s 2020 figure is given as nearly 68 rather than about 66, a small overestimate. The overview could be more complete by noting that table tennis became the second-largest activity and that martial arts fluctuated around a stable level. Overall, the key trends are addressed and supported, with some scope for a more precise and comprehensive overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised clearly into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. Information progresses logically from the leading activity and martial arts to the remaining three activities, and signposts such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile” and “Finally” help the reader follow the comparisons. Some linking is less controlled within sentences: “Marital arts started at 36 participants in 2000, it fluctuated…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma, as does the sentence beginning “Meanwhile, table tennis showed…”. These joins slightly interrupt the otherwise clear flow. To strengthen cohesion, use full stops or conjunctions at these points and make comparisons between activities more explicit rather than relying mainly on sequence markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
There is an adequate range of task-appropriate vocabulary, including “remained the highest,” “fluctuated,” “significant growth,” “sharp decline” and “peaked.” These choices communicate the main trends effectively, and the response varies its descriptions of change. However, several spelling errors—“p[opular,” “particpants,” “darmatics” and “droping”—reduce accuracy. “Marital arts” is also an incorrect word choice for “martial arts,” and “the most popular figure” is an awkward collocation when referring to an activity. Some phrasing, such as “grew to reach nearly 20,” is understandable but could be more precise. More accurate spelling and natural collocations would show stronger control of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the contrast in “but then experienced a sharp decline” and the time clause “by 2020.” Most sentences are readily understood, and the past tense is generally appropriate for the period shown. However, some sentence structures are not controlled consistently. For example, “Marital arts started at 36 participants in 2000, it fluctuated…” and “starting with just 16 people in 2000, it rose steadily…” contain comma splices or awkwardly attached clauses. The phrase “the film club started was clearly…” also has an unnecessary or misplaced verb. Separating these ideas or joining them with suitable conjunctions would improve accuracy while preserving the range of structures.
