Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the chart’s general subject and attempts an overview, but it does not accurately report several key features. Table tennis and musical performances both rose, but film-club participation also increased overall, from about 64 to 66, while martial arts fluctuated around the mid-30s rather than declining steadily. Most importantly, amateur dramatics fell sharply; the claim that it was “dominating” in the later years reverses the chart’s pattern. The account also ends mid-word and omits meaningful coverage of film club and martial arts. The response is 146 words, below the 150-word minimum; the 10 words copied from the prompt are excluded. To improve, give a precise overview and compare the main rises, falls and stable series using accurate figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: an opening identifies the chart, an overview follows, and the final paragraph begins to describe individual activities. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “regarding,” and “Similarly” show an attempt to guide the reader. However, progression is limited because the response discusses table tennis and musical performances but leaves the other series largely unreported, and it ends abruptly with “inc”. Connections between ideas are sometimes unclear, as in the sentence about music performances, where the sequence of changes is difficult to follow. Paragraphing and a more consistent order—overview, then grouped comparisons—would make the report easier to navigate. Use linking words only where the relationship between the data points is clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response attempts some task-appropriate vocabulary, including “increased steadily,” “approximately,” and “final year,” and it uses labels for several activities. However, spelling and word-choice errors are frequent enough to make parts difficult to understand: “Astralia,” “performences,” “figuers,” and “illistrated” are examples. Several phrases are also unnatural or unclear, such as “the taken of table tennis,” “participants of data,” and “players assignment.” Use standard chart-reporting collocations and check spelling carefully. For example, describe participant numbers as “rose” or “increased,” and refer to “participation in musical performances.” More accurate vocabulary would help communicate the trends without forcing the reader to interpret the intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both simple and longer sentence forms, but control is inconsistent, and errors often obscure relationships between ideas. The opening contains a sentence fragment-like construction: “It covers the period between 2000 and 2020, Over a span of 20 years.” In the overview, “the film club and martial arts was declined” has faulty verb construction and agreement. Other examples include “the music concerts activities was” and “in the first year after the figures illustrated increased,” where sentence structure and verb forms are difficult to follow. Capitalisation after commas is also inconsistent. Practise complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use accurate past-tense forms to describe the chart. A few well-controlled complex sentences would be more effective than long, error-prone ones.
