The given line graph illustrates data about how many individuals involved in distinct activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, participants involved in film club remained significant over the time of given period. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response identifies the main patterns accurately: film club remains the largest activity, table tennis rises sharply, amateur dramatics declines, and martial arts fluctuates. It also gives relevant comparisons and supports them with figures, such as film club falling to 60 in 2010 before recovering and table tennis reaching the mid-50s by 2020. The overview is clear, although “remained significant” is less precise than stating that film club stayed the most popular. One factual detail needs correction: musical performances began at zero in 2000, not 2005. The description of table tennis as the second-most popular by 2020 is also not quite right, since martial arts is lower but film club remains first and table tennis is second; this comparison is valid. Overall, the key features are selected and reported clearly, with some generalisation and a minor data error.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group the activities into rising or stable trends and declining or fluctuating trends. This gives the reader a logical route through the information. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “On the other hand,” and “Similarly” help signal relationships, and the comparisons are generally easy to follow. However, some transitions are awkward or imprecise, particularly “Alternatively,” which does not clearly introduce a contrast, and “while” in the final sentence joins two trends without a fully balanced structure. The overview and body also repeat some points. More precise referencing and smoother links between comparisons would make cohesion more flexible and less noticeable.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses a reasonable range of trend vocabulary, including “dramatic surge,” “fluctuated,” “remained stable,” and “gradually,” which helps convey changes over time. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or inaccurate, such as “participants involved in,” “hiked again,” “massive dropped,” and “least most popular.” “Significant” is also vague when describing the film club’s position. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main trends, but they make the account less precise and fluent. Aim for standard chart-reporting phrases such as “the number of participants,” “rose again,” “a sharp decline,” and “the least popular activity.” Check word forms and collocations when using less familiar vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “then,” “but,” and “while,” and the overall meaning is usually clear. However, errors occur in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation. For example, “how many individuals involved” is missing a suitable verb construction, while “Amateur dramatics's figure fell while, number of participants” has faulty punctuation and an omitted article. The phrase “a massive dropped” also shows an incorrect grammatical form, and “making it dominant activity” needs an article. These issues recur, especially in longer sentences, and sometimes make the reader pause. Build accuracy by checking each sentence for a complete clause, correct verb form, and appropriate articles before adding further clauses.
