Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph illustrates the number of people taking part in various activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the grpah shows that film club and martial arts share almost similar trend, while table tennis experienced a significant growth. Amateur dramatics rose slightly but declined sharply whereas musical performance started later but had notable increase.
Film club remains the most popular activity throughout the years, starting with around 63 participants, which declined to around 60 by 2010, and then increased again to almost 65 participants in 2020. Martial arts was the second most popular choice until it was overtaken by table tennis in 2015, which started in 2000 with about 25 participants and skyrocketed to more than 50 participants by 2020. Amateur dramatics rose from approximately 36 members to nearly 38 members in 2005, but then experienced a major decline and dropped to around 6 participants only in 2020. Musical performance started later in 2005 but kept increasing until reaching around 26 participants by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You provide a clear overview of the main patterns, identifying film club as consistently most popular, table tennis as the strongest growth story, and amateur dramatics as declining. Several comparisons are also relevant, including table tennis overtaking martial arts in 2015. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: amateur dramatics began at about 26, not 36, and musical performances began in 2010, not 2005; the final figure was about 18, rather than 26. The overview also says film club and martial arts had almost similar trends, although their levels and movements differ. These misreadings and unevenly developed details limit the precision of the report. Check each series against the graph and distinguish starting levels from later changes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview and a detail paragraph, and the information generally progresses from broad trends to individual series. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “whereas” and “but then” help show contrast and change. The final paragraph also groups the activities in a readable way. To make the progression more precise, organise the details around clearer comparisons—for example, describe the two high-level activities together, then contrast the rising table-tennis line with declining amateur dramatics. Some references are slightly unclear, particularly “which started in 2000,” since the nearest subject is table tennis but the sentence’s structure makes the reference less direct. More explicit links between comparisons would strengthen an already clear structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of trend vocabulary, including “declined,” “increased,” “overtaken,” “major decline” and “skyrocketed,” which helps communicate changes without relying only on basic verbs. Some choices are less precise or natural for an academic graph report: “share almost similar trend” is awkward, “started later” misrepresents the musical-performances series, and “participants only” is an unnatural placement of “only.” There is also a spelling slip in “grpah,” and the singular “musical performance” does not match the chart label. The range is adequate and meaning remains clear, but more accurate collocations and consistent use of the activity labels would improve precision and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “while,” “whereas” and “which,” and most sentences communicate the intended trends clearly. There are some grammatical inaccuracies. In “Film club remains the most popular activity,” the present tense is inconsistent with the completed period; use “remained.” The phrase “share almost similar trend” needs an article and a more suitable construction, such as “followed broadly similar trends.” In “started in 2000 with about 25 participants,” the clause attachment is unclear, and “dropped to around 6 participants only” has awkward word order. These issues do not generally obstruct understanding, but checking tense consistency, articles and clause structure would make the report more accurate.
