Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line chart presents data on the number of contestants for various activities at one social center in Melbourne, Australia for the years 2000 to 2020.

Overall, there was a consistent trend of people participating in Film club which remained dominant through those years. Table tennis peaked in the year 2020 after the film club. There was a stable number of people opted for Martial arts.

More than 60 people participated in film club all those years and it stood on top of the chart. Although table tennis had less number of partcipants initially which was around 15 people, It had a marginal growth for the years later on and showed a surge of growth in 2015 and nearly 55 people chose this activity by 2020. Martial arts was chosen by almost the same amount of people through those years which is around 35.

Amateur dramatics were not as favorable as the rest, but in 2000 approximately 25 people took part in this activity and later on it was declined to less than 10 people in 2020. It can be observed that no participant has shown interest for musical performance till 2005 and had a minimal number of people choosing it later on which is around 15 by year 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response identifies the main patterns accurately: the film club remains the largest activity, table tennis rises sharply to become second by 2020, amateur dramatics declines, and musical performances begin later and grow. The overview is clear, and the body supports it with relevant figures such as table tennis increasing from about 15 to 55 and amateur dramatics falling from about 25 to below 10. This gives the account a strong, well-supported coverage of the chart. Some descriptions are a little broad: “a consistent trend” for the film club overlooks its slight fall before recovery, while “stable” martial-arts participation masks modest fluctuations. More precise comparisons across the years would make the reporting more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview and two detail paragraphs, with related activities grouped sensibly. The progression from the dominant film club and rising table tennis to the declining and later-starting activities is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Although,” “but,” and “It can be observed” help connect ideas, and the overall arrangement is coherent. However, some connections are mechanical or imprecise: “Table tennis peaked in the year 2020 after the film club” is unclear as a comparison, and “for the years later on” does not clearly specify the period. The overview also repeats information developed in the body. Use more direct comparisons and clearer references to years to make cohesion more flexible and precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for describing the chart, and the response uses relevant terms such as “dominant,” “surge,” “declined,” and “approximately.” These choices communicate the main trends, though some are not used naturally or precisely. “Contestants” is not the best term for people taking part in social-centre activities, and “marginal growth” understates the later sharp rise in table tennis. There are also spelling errors, including “partcipants,” and awkward phrases such as “less number of participants” and “showed a surge of growth.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and control. Aim for accurate collocations and a wider set of trend verbs, while checking spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a concession with “Although” and clauses describing changes over time. Most meanings remain clear, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions persist. For example, “There was a stable number of people opted for Martial arts” needs a relative clause or a different structure, such as “The number of people who opted for martial arts was stable.” In “Amateur dramatics … later on it was declined,” the passive form is incorrect; use “the figure later declined.” The sentence about musical performances also shifts awkwardly between “has shown” and “had.” Review verb forms, clause construction, and punctuation, especially where two complete ideas are joined, to improve accuracy while retaining sentence variety.
