Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
You identify the chart’s subject and give a relevant overview by noting that the film club had the most participants throughout. The two figures you report for 2000 and 2005 are also close to the chart. However, the response is far too brief to summarise the main features: it gives no information about the other four activities, later years, or important changes such as table tennis rising sharply and amateur dramatics declining. The overview is therefore only partial, and the figures are not developed into meaningful comparisons. The response also falls short of the required 150 words. To improve, cover the main trends across the period and support your overview with selected figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic, understandable order: it introduces the graph, gives an overall statement, and then provides two figures for the film club. This simple progression helps the reader follow the limited information presented. However, the response ends before it develops into a complete report, and there is no paragraphing or linking of comparisons across activities and years. The repeated focus on the film club also leaves the information without a broader organising structure. Build a clear report with an introduction, an overview, and one or two body paragraphs grouping the main trends; use links such as “by contrast” or “while” to connect relevant comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use relevant basic vocabulary, including “number of individuals,” “participating,” and “maintained the highest,” so the topic is clear. However, the range is narrow because the response describes only one activity and uses few terms for reporting change or comparison. Some phrasing is also unnatural: “five various activities” is redundant, and “between a period of 20 years” is not idiomatic. “65 and 63 number of participants” is awkward and imprecise. Use concise chart language such as “five activities over 20 years,” “the figure stood at,” and “participants rose/fell to” to report the data more naturally. A fuller response would also allow you to demonstrate a wider range of accurate vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The sentences are generally understandable, and the simple present in “The graph shows” and “Film club maintained” communicates the basic message. However, the response relies almost entirely on short, simple sentence patterns, so it shows little grammatical range. There are also problems with number and sentence construction in “about 65 and 63 number of participants,” where the noun phrase is not formed correctly. The opening sentence, “between a period of 20 years,” also uses an awkward grammatical pattern. Practise accurate comparative structures, for example, “The film club had about 65 participants in 2000, compared with roughly 62 in 2005,” and combine trends using clauses such as “while” and “whereas.”
