Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph illustrates the participations in various activities at a social centre in Melbourne over a period of 20 years from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, the number of table tennis and muscle performaces' participants increased significantly whereas for amateur dramatics their figure declined substantialy. However, the number of participants in martial arts and film club stood almost same with slight fluctuations between the period.

Table tennis participants in 2000 were about 15 which gradually increased to 20 until 2010 before rising sharply to around 55 by 2020. While muscial performances were initiated in 2005, its figure increased considerably to about 18 participants by 2020.

In 2000, amateur dramatics accounted for approximately 25 participants. Furthermore, its figure slighty increased before declining dramatically to only 5 participants in 2020. In addition, martial art and film club started with about 35 and 65 number of participants respectively. Although, the figures for both of them underwent slight fluctuations, but then stayed approximately same at 35 and 66 respectively by the end of period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response selects the main trends and gives a clear overview: table tennis and musical performances rise, amateur dramatics falls, and film club and martial arts remain broadly stable. The figures cited are generally consistent with the graph, including table tennis reaching about 55 and amateur dramatics falling to around 5–6 by 2020. The account also compares the activities at the beginning and end of the period. To make the summary more fully supported, report the musical performances’ starting point as 0 in 2000 and note that they began increasing by 2010; saying they were “initiated in 2005” misstates the timing. More precise descriptions of the fluctuations in film club and martial arts would also strengthen the coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear four-part structure: introduction, overview, and two paragraphs grouping the rising and declining or stable activities. This gives the information a logical progression, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “before,” and “In addition” help guide the reader. The organisation is coherent, but cohesion is not always smooth: “Furthermore” does not clearly signal the small initial rise in amateur dramatics, while “Although … but then” combines two contrasting linkers unnecessarily. Some references, such as “its figure,” require the reader to infer which activity is meant. Use more precise references and vary the links to show contrast, sequence, and comparison without relying on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “increased significantly,” “rising sharply,” “declined,” and “slight fluctuations.” These choices make the overall patterns understandable. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, such as “muscle performaces,” “muscial,” and “substantialy.” Some collocations are also awkward: “the number … stood almost same” and “started with … number of participants” are not natural ways to describe the data. Use accurate activity names consistently—“musical performances” and “martial arts”—and choose concise chart language such as “remained broadly stable” or “stood at approximately.” This would make the vocabulary more controlled and appropriate to an academic summary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including a subordinate clause in “before rising sharply” and a contrast clause beginning “Although.” Most meanings remain clear, and the time frame is generally handled appropriately. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “the number … stood almost same” is missing an article or equivalent construction, and “Although, the figures …, but then stayed” has faulty punctuation and an incompatible conjunction pattern. “In 2000, amateur dramatics accounted for approximately 25 participants” is understandable, but the later reference “its figure” is grammatically less clear. Aim for cleaner sentence patterns, such as “Although both figures fluctuated slightly, they ended at approximately 35 and 66, respectively.”
