Student answer (Band 6.0)

The trend graph provides information about the participants in five different activities at the social center in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, over two decades, film club has the most numbers of pariticpants followed by table tennis. The figures for amateur dramatics remain the lowest among all, while martial arts has sustained static numbers.

Film clubs has the highest numbers, started at 65 in 2000, and remained at the top among all at 67. Table tennis number substantially increased in the last decade; however, they begun at 15, and remained steady before reaching to the 51 numbers. Martial arts illustrates some fluctuation, mostly the numbers remained unchanged, and ended the decade with a number of 35.

Amateure dramatics numbers started decreasing in 2005, and the figures fell sharply to 2 in 2020. On other hand, musical performances demonstrates improvment, started at 0 later in 2005, but gradually increased, and finished at 24 in the end of the 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall patterns: film club remains the largest activity, table tennis rises markedly, and amateur dramatics declines. You also cover all five activities and include useful comparisons. However, some details are inaccurate: film club is about 64 in 2000 and 66 in 2020, rather than 65 and 67; table tennis ends at approximately 54, not 51; amateur dramatics falls to about 6, not 2; and musical performances finishes near 18, not 24. The overview also says martial arts is “static,” although it fluctuates between roughly 32 and 38. The response therefore selects relevant features, but the inaccuracies and limited development of some trends reduce its precision. Check each endpoint and describe variation more carefully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the activities. This makes the information easy to follow, and contrast markers such as “however” and “On other hand” help signal relationships. The grouping could be more systematic, though: the final two paragraphs move between activities without a consistent basis, and some references are unclear, as in “they begun at 15,” where the reader must infer that “they” means table tennis participants. Linking phrases are also occasionally awkward or repetitive. To strengthen progression, group the rising, falling, and relatively stable series, and use explicit references such as “the table-tennis figure” rather than pronouns whose antecedents are uncertain.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of trend vocabulary for describing a graph, including “fluctuation,” “substantially increased,” “fell sharply,” and “gradually increased.” These choices communicate the broad patterns, but several collocations and word forms are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “the most numbers of participants,” “Table tennis number,” and “at the top among all.” There are also spelling errors in “pariticpants,” “Amateure,” and “improvment,” which detract from control. Aim for precise, conventional chart language and check spelling carefully. For example, refer to “the number of participants” and say a figure “rose to” a value, rather than “reaching to” it.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “however” and a sentence describing a gradual increase. The main trends remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include subject–verb agreement in “Film clubs has,” tense and verb-form problems in “they begun” and “started at 0 later in 2005,” and missing or incorrect articles and prepositions in phrases such as “On other hand” and “reaching to the 51 numbers.” Singular and plural forms are also inconsistent. Review agreement, past-tense forms, and article use, then build accurate comparisons with patterns such as “the figure began at … and rose to ….”
