Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph depicts the information regarding the numbers of participants involved in five different activities at on social centrein Melbourne, Australia from 2000 till 2020.

Considering from an overall perspective, it can be observed that the film club recorded highest number of participants whereas, the lowest were recorded in amateur dramatics. Notably, till 2005 there were no participant engaged in musical performances.

To commence with, the number of participants in the film club was consistently higher than in martial arts, and both activities showed little variation from 2000 to 2020. Specifically, the film club maintained around 60 participants, while martial arts fluctuated slightly around the 30-participant mark.

Table tennis and musical performances, on the other hand, saw notable increases. In 2010, the number of participants in table tennis and musical performances rose to nearly 60 and 20, respectively. Conversely, the number of participants in amateur dramatics fell sharply, dropping from 30 participants in 2005 to less than 10 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main patterns: the film club remains the largest activity, amateur dramatics declines, and table tennis and musical performances rise. The overview is relevant, and the comparison between film club and martial arts is supported by the body. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: amateur dramatics was not the lowest throughout the period, since musical performances had no participants until 2005; and table tennis reached about 20 in 2010, not nearly 60. The statement that musical performances rose to “20” is broadly close to the final value, but the timing should be specified as 2020. This covers the task, though the overview and selected figures need more precise development to make the key changes fully clear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction and overview to two paragraphs grouping the activities by their trends. Linking expressions such as “To commence with” and “on the other hand” help signal these shifts, and the main ideas are generally easy to follow. Some connections are less effective: “In 2010” appears to introduce figures for both table tennis and musical performances, although the nearly 60 figure does not match that year, making the comparison confusing. The overview also combines the lowest-participant claim with the point about musical performances without clarifying how these relate over time. More precise sequencing and references to the relevant years would strengthen progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “fluctuated slightly,” “notable increases,” and “fell sharply.” These choices communicate the broad patterns, and the response uses some variation rather than repeating “increased” or “decreased.” However, several phrases are awkward or imprecise, such as “Considering from an overall perspective,” “recorded highest number,” and “rose to nearly 60” for table tennis in 2010. “Till” is less appropriate than “until” in this formal report, and “on social centrein” contains a spacing and phrasing problem. Aim for natural collocations and precise descriptions of values and time points; this would make the vocabulary more controlled and informative.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the contrast in “whereas” and the participial phrase “dropping from 30 participants in 2005.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions are present. The opening has an article and spacing problem in “at on social centrein Melbourne,” while “the film club recorded highest number” needs an article before “highest.” In “there were no participant engaged,” the plural form and sentence construction are incorrect; a clearer version would be “there were no participants in musical performances.” The comma after “whereas” is also unnecessary. More careful control of articles, plurals, and sentence punctuation would improve accuracy.
