The line graph tracks the variations in the number of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia, for the period 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the film club had the highest number of participants throughout the period, followed by a sharp rise in table tennis participants after 2010. Martial arts and musical performances showed variation in numbers, while amateur dramatics participants decreased after 2005.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main overall pattern: the film club remains the largest activity, table tennis rises strongly, and amateur dramatics declines. Several figures are broadly accurate, including the film club’s fall to 60 in 2010 and rise to 66 in 2020. However, some data are misreported: table tennis began at about 16, not 27, and martial arts was about 36 in 2000 and 38 in 2010, rather than 37 and 39. The overview also says musical performances varied, although they rose steadily after starting at zero. The response is 148 words, below the 150-word minimum. Include more accurate comparisons and ensure the overview reflects the clearest trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph reporting figures. This makes the information easy to follow, and sequencing from the film club to the other activities is generally sensible. However, the body reads mainly as a list of separate series, with limited comparison between them; for example, it could highlight that table tennis overtook martial arts by 2015 and approached the film club by 2020. Some linking is repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “and” and “reached.” Grouping the declining and rising activities, and using clearer contrasts such as “whereas” or “by comparison,” would create stronger progression and less mechanical cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-appropriate vocabulary, including “tracks the variations,” “sharp rise,” “decreased,” and “continued increase.” These choices communicate the main trends, and the language is generally clear. Some phrasing is imprecise or repetitive: “showed variation in numbers” does not accurately describe the steady rise in musical performances, while “the line showed a continued increase” is less direct than describing participant numbers themselves. “Amateur drama” also differs from the chart’s label, “amateur dramatics.” Aim for precise trend vocabulary and avoid repeating “showed” and “reached.” More accurate wording will make the comparisons sound more natural and help distinguish stable, fluctuating, rising, and declining patterns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most sentences communicate the intended information without difficulty. The opening sentence and the overview use clear structures, while phrases such as “fell to 60 in 2010” and “decreased continuously over the period” show control of past-tense reporting. Some errors remain: “rising to 39 in 1010” contains an incorrect year, and the sentence beginning “37 were participating in martial arts” has an unclear subject construction. The repeated pattern of short clauses joined by “and” also limits structural variety. Check figures and sentence subjects carefully, and combine related trends using accurate subordinate or contrast clauses.
