Student answer (Band 6.0)
The graph illustrates data of the participants of various activities at one social centre in Melbourne between 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the number participants had increased over the time period. The film club remained the activity with highest attendies all the time. Table tennis over passed the martial art to become the second favourite activity. While amateur dramatics was the only activity which experienced a decline in participants, musical performances were added to the activities later.
Film club had the highest number of participants 65 in 2000, it experienced very slight fluctuation over time and remained the favourite among all activities with 68 participants by 2020. Martial arts started with 35 participants in 2000, It was second popular activity unless number of participants in table tennis surged daramtically after 2010 and out passed the martial arts in 2015 to become second popular activity, it ended with a number of 58 particpants in 2020. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main patterns: the film club remains the most popular, table tennis rises sharply to become second, amateur dramatics declines, and musical performances appear later. Most reported figures are close to the chart, and the response covers all five activities. However, the overview says participation increased overall, which is too broad because martial arts fluctuates and amateur dramatics falls substantially. There are also a few factual inaccuracies: film club ends at about 66, not 68; table tennis ends at about 54, not 58; and musical performances begin in 2010, not 2005. The phrase “rose to 12 by 2005” also conflicts with the chart. A more precise overview and careful checking of dates and endpoints would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, a summary of the main trends, and a final paragraph giving details. The overview usefully groups the activities by their broad patterns, and the account generally moves through the period in chronological order. However, the final paragraph becomes difficult to follow in the long sentence beginning “Martial arts started…”: several changes are joined together, and the comparison with table tennis is not clearly punctuated. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly repeated use of “then” and “while.” Separate the series into shorter, logically grouped sentences and use clearer references to dates and activities. This would make the progression more consistently smooth and reduce moments where the reader has to reread.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “fluctuation,” “declined,” “surged,” and “participants,” and the main trends are usually understandable. There are also attempts at more precise comparison, such as describing table tennis as becoming the second-favourite activity. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal: “over passed” and “out passed” should be “overtook,” while “second popular activity” is better expressed as “second most popular activity.” “Attendies” is not the appropriate noun, and spelling errors such as “daramtically” and “particpants” reduce accuracy. Aim for consistent, natural trend language and check spelling and word forms; this would make the vocabulary more precise without needing unnecessarily complex expressions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a contrast with “While” and clauses describing changes over time. The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the number participants” needs “the number of participants,” and “between 2000 to 2020” should use “from…to” or “between…and.” In “Film club had the highest number of participants 65,” a preposition or linking phrase is needed before the figure. The long martial-arts sentence contains a comma splice and unclear clause structure, while “It” after a comma should begin a new sentence or follow a suitable conjunction. Review articles, prepositions, sentence boundaries, and agreement, and divide complex sentences where necessary to improve control.
