Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the chart’s subject and period, and your overview correctly notes that the film club remained the most popular activity while musical performances rose from the lowest starting point. However, the response addresses the task only minimally: it gives no detailed comparisons or supporting figures, and the final sentence beginning “By contrast, martial arts, amateur dramatics and table tennis” is unfinished. The claim that film-club participation “declined … before reaching to 60” is also unclear and does not capture its slight dip followed by a rise to about 66. The response is 91 words, below the required 150. To improve, complete the overview and report the main contrasting trends, such as table tennis’s sharp growth and amateur dramatics’ decline, with selected figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt at organisation: an introductory sentence is followed by an overview, and “Overall” and “By contrast” signal relationships between ideas. However, the response does not progress into a body paragraph with the chart’s details. The final contrast is left incomplete, followed by the isolated fragment “In”, so the reader cannot follow the intended comparison or reach a conclusion. Some linking is also awkward: “while” is used in a way that does not clearly connect the two trends. Organise the report into an introduction, a concise overview, and one or two paragraphs grouping the activities by trend; then use complete sentences and clear references throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is sufficient to identify the chart and its categories, using terms such as “participants,” “activity,” and “increased.” You also attempt more descriptive language with “dramatically” and “significant number.” However, the range is limited, and some choices are imprecise or repetitive: “activity done by participants” is repeated, while “the most common activity” is less suitable for describing the highest participation figure. “Increased by a significant number” is also vague. Use concise chart-reporting expressions such as “had the highest participation,” “rose steadily,” “fell sharply,” and “remained relatively stable.” Check spelling of “amateur,” and avoid adding intensifiers unless the scale of change supports them.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both a complex sentence and an overview structure, but control is uneven. In “although the participants declined in following year and before reaching to 60,” the clause is incomplete and the sequence of verb forms is faulty; “while, the participants dramatically increased” also has an unnecessary comma and an unclear clause structure. The unfinished “By contrast…” sentence and standalone “In” further show that sentence boundaries are not consistently controlled. The opening sentence is understandable, but spacing and punctuation around the list are inconsistent. Practise writing complete clauses with a clear subject and verb, and use past-tense forms consistently for the period shown—for example, “Participation fell slightly, then rose to about 66.”
