Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph compares the number of people participated in different activities at a social enter in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, film club attracted highest number of participants over the entire period. Table tennis and film club ended up with the highest while musical perfromances and Amateur dramatics the fewest participations.

Although the participations in film club remained the highest over the whole period, they remained stable between 60 and 70. Martial arts followed the same trend with participations between 30 and 40 over the two decades. The pattern kept changing for the rest of skills. Music had no participants till year 2005; the number gradually increased for the next 5 years to 10 but ended up at 15 by 2020.

Participations in table Tennis remained relatively stable from 2000 to 2010 between 15 and 20 but they saw a sharp rise for the next decade and ended up with around 55 participants in 2020. On the other hand, dramatics followed the reverse trend. The number of participants were 20 in 2010 but in 2020, the number was even below 5.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall pattern: the film club remained the most popular activity, table tennis rose markedly, and amateur dramatics declined. Several figures and trends are reported accurately, including table tennis’s stability through 2010 and its rise to about 55, and dramatics falling to a very low level by 2020. However, the overview is partly unclear: saying both film club and table tennis “ended up with the highest” overlooks that film club still had more participants. The musical-performance account also misses the rise from zero in 2005 to around 12 in 2010 and then to about 18 in 2020. A clearer overview and more precise coverage of this series would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the activities. Comparisons such as “On the other hand” help signal the contrast between table tennis and amateur dramatics, and the information is generally easy to follow. Some links and references are less precise, however. “The pattern kept changing for the rest of skills” is vague, and “they” in “they saw a sharp rise” could refer either to participants or activities. The overview also repeats the film club’s leading position without clearly organising the main contrasts. Grouping the rising series together and the declining or stable series together, with more specific transitions, would strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “remained stable,” “gradually increased,” “sharp rise,” and “reverse trend.” These choices communicate the main movements, but the range and precision are uneven. Several expressions are unnatural or imprecise, such as “people participated,” “social enter,” “participations,” and “rest of skills”; “number of participants” and “activities” would be more suitable. There are also spelling errors in “perfromances” and inconsistent capitalisation in “table Tennis.” Aim for accurate collocations and avoid repeating “participants” where a clear alternative such as “figures” or “numbers” fits. This would make the description more fluent and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple and more complex forms, including the contrastive clause “Although the participations in film club remained the highest…” and the time clause “from 2000 to 2010.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening phrase should be “the number of people who participated,” while “film club attracted highest number” needs an article before “highest.” In “musical performances and Amateur dramatics the fewest,” the verb is missing; “the number of participants were 20” also has a subject–verb agreement error. The sentence about music combines several time points in a way that makes the sequence less clear. Check articles, complete clauses, and agreement, while retaining varied sentence structures.
