Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given line graph illustrates the numbers of participants for different activities between 2000 and 2020 at an institute which is located in Melbourne, Australia.
Overall, it can be seen that, the participant number increased significantly in table tennis whereas amateur dramatics experienced the opposite. However, even though both musical performances and martial arts participants gradually rose but it couldn't reach same as film club and eventually it was the highest participating activity.
In the beginning, in 2000, the number of participants in martial arts were around 35 in number. However, over the time the numbers fluctuated slightly though in the end, in 2020 it was increased again to roughly 37 persons. On the other hand, table tennis participation was only about 16 people in the year 2000 which faced a decline during the period from 2005 to 2010 but after that, it soared and reached almost 55 participants.
Meanwhile, amaterur dramatics followed a different trend and it dropped to almost 5 participants in 2020 from having approximately 28 contestants. Furthermore, musical performances were introduced in 2005 with no participants at all but over the period it gradually increased to nearly 20 number. Nevertheless, the film club participation was always on top and it always had more or less 60 to 67 people during the given period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response gives a clear overview of the main patterns: table tennis rises markedly, amateur dramatics declines, and film club remains the most popular activity. It also reports the broad movement of martial arts and musical performances, and most figures are consistent with the graph. The main factual weakness is the claim that musical performances were “introduced in 2005”; the graph shows zero participants in both 2000 and 2005, with participation first appearing in 2010. The overview also says martial arts and musical performances “gradually rose,” although martial arts fluctuated rather than rising overall. More precise comparisons across the years, especially the sharp table-tennis increase after 2010, would make the account more fully supported and avoid over-generalisation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, with a generally clear progression from the main trends to individual activities. Linking expressions such as “On the other hand” and “Meanwhile” help signal comparisons, and the reader can follow the account. However, some connections are mechanical or do not express the relationship accurately: “Furthermore” introduces musical performances without a clear addition, while “Nevertheless” before the film-club detail suggests contrast where the point is simply that this activity stayed highest. The overview sentence beginning “However, even though…” is also awkwardly joined. Use fewer, more precise transitions and group related trends consistently to make cohesion smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “fluctuated,” “soared,” “dropped,” and “gradually increased,” which helps describe changes rather than merely list figures. Some choices, however, are imprecise or unnatural for a graph report: participants are described as “contestants,” the venue as an “institute,” and the phrase “reached nearly 20 number” is not idiomatic. “The participant number” and “persons” also sound less natural than standard chart-reporting expressions. Spelling is generally understandable, though “amaterur” is an error. Aim for precise collocations such as “number of participants,” “stood at,” and “rose to,” and reserve trend verbs for changes that the data actually show.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “whereas,” “even though,” and “though.” Meaning is usually clear, but some errors recur in agreement, verb forms and sentence construction. For example, “the number … were” should use a singular verb, and “it was increased again” is an incorrect passive form for this trend; write “it increased again.” The overview’s “even though … but” uses two competing conjunctions, and “it couldn't reach same as film club” lacks a grammatical comparison structure. Articles and prepositions also need attention in phrases such as “over the time.” More accurate control of these patterns, alongside the existing sentence variety, would strengthen the writing.
